Technical Exhibit J-006 - Bailey Bridge Maintenance and Inspection Instructions Bailey Bridge’s Maintenance and Inspection The Bailey Bridge requires very little maintenance when these instructions are followed. Your bridge may have a variety of finishes and floor types and the instructions appropriate for your finish, floor, and rail system should be followed. These instructions are advisory in nature and other inspection requirements required by your local governing agency, depending on type of use, should be followed.
Bridge structure
· Every two years, the bridge should be inspected for structural integrity and overall corrosion.
· The bridge should be inspected for damage caused by vehicular collision, falling objects such as trees or rocks, overloads, or extreme events such as earthquakes, floods, or hurricanes. (The bridge should be inspected immediately following an extreme event).
· The inspector should also be wary of fatigue cracks on bridges where vehicular traffic is regularly experienced.
· Ensure that all hardware such as pins and bolts are in place.
· Check transom clamps for tightness on “M” style bridges.
Floor system
· Wood floors should be inspected for wood condition and excessive splitting, shake, or warpage.
· Wood connections should be inspected for excessive corrosion and looseness.
· Bridges intended for pedestrian use should also be inspected for tripping hazards.
· Concrete floors may experience small shrinkage cracks which generally are not detrimental. A surface sealer should be considered if cracks will allow moisture to penetrate to the decking material below.
· Grid decks should be inspected for security to support structure and for any cracked welds.
Rail system
· Inspect the rails for continuity (no excessive gaps) and general condition.
· If the use of the bridge has changed from that originally intended (such as converting a vehicular bridge to pedestrian use) then the rail system should be critiqued for safety and applicability of use.
· Rail connections should be adequate and in place.
Bearings
· The bridge should be kept free from vegetation and earth so that there is no constant source of moisture against the bridge.
· The bearings should be clear of buildup and expansion bearings free to slide.
Finish
· Painted bridges should be touched up immediately after installation.
· Any nicks or scratches should be repaired according to the methods appropriate for the particular type of paint system.
· Occasional maintenance of the paint system will greatly prolong the life of the finish.
· Excessive paint deterioration should be addressed with blasting and recoating before excessive pitting and loss of steel section occurs.
