About this file

This is a specification document for the City of Clarksdale, Mississippi, regarding the design, fabrication, and delivery of one prefabricated pedestrian bridge constructed of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials. The bridge will span 80 feet with an 8-foot width and feature a side-truss design. The structure must be engineered by a licensed professional engineer and designed to accommodate a minimum live load of 90 pounds per square foot, wind speeds of 125 miles per hour, seismic design category C, an overturning load of 20 pounds per square foot, and a snow load of 27 pounds per square foot. The bridge will be posted with "No Motor Vehicles" signs and will not support vehicle traffic. All members shall be fabricated from pultruded FRP composite profiles, and the bridge shall be precambered to eliminate initial dead load deflections with a minimum camber of 1 percent of the total span length. Delivery will be made by truck to a location designated by the City of Clarksdale, with the successful bidder responsible for notifying the city upon manufacture completion and arranging delivery. Unloading, splicing if required, and placement shall be the responsibility of the City of Clarksdale.

The successful bidder must demonstrate a minimum of five years in bridge design and fabrication business and provide references for five similar bridge projects in service for at least three years. FRP composite materials shall be fabricated from high-strength E-glass and isophthalic polyester resin with specified minimum material strengths and a minimum thickness of 0.25 inches for various structural shapes. Bolted connections shall use A307 hot-dipped galvanized steel, and bridge color shall be determined by the client with no painting required. The successful bidder shall warrant the structural integrity of all FRP materials, design, and workmanship for 15 years, excluding defects caused by foundation failures, abuse, misuse, overloading, accident, faulty construction, or alteration. The prospective bidder may provide a separate additive alternate bid for composite 2 x 6 plank decking, with the City of Clarksdale reserving the right to accept or reject this alternate bid. Structural drawings and calculations must be submitted to the city after receipt of order and before manufacture begins, signed and sealed by a licensed professional engineer.

PART 1 GENERAL

1.1 SCOPE

A. These specifications are for a fully engineered clear span side-truss pedestrian bridge of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite construction and shall be regarded as minimum standards for design and fabrication.

1.2 QUALIFIED SUPPLIERS

A. The bridge manufacturer shall have been in the business of design and fabrication of bridges for a minimum of 5 years and provide a list of five successful bridge projects, of similar construction, each of which has been in service at least 3 years. List the location, bridge size, owner, and contact reference for each bridge.

PART 2 - GENERAL FEATURES OF DESIGN

2.1 SPAN

A. Bridge span will be 80' 0" (straight line dimension) and shall be measured from each end of the bridge structure.

2.2 WIDTH

A. Bridge width shall be 8' 0" and shall be measured from the inside face of structural elements at deck level.

2.3 BRIDGE SYSTEM TYPE

A. Bridge must be designed as a FRP Composite Side-Truss Span .

2.4 MEMBER COMPONENTS

A. All members shall be fabricated from pultruded FRP composite profiles and structural shapes as required.

2.5 CAMBER

A. Bridge shall be precambered to eliminate initial dead load deflections. Minimum camber shall be 1% of the total span length.

PART 3 - ENGINEERING

A. Structural design of the bridge structure(s) shall be performed by or under the direct supervision of a licensed professional engineer and done in accordance with recognized engineering practices and principles.

3.1 UNIFORM LIVE LOAD

PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE DESIGN, FABRICATION, DELIVERY 23 JANUARY 2026 323413–2

A. Design live load (LL) shall be a minimum of 90 psf.

3.2 VEHICLE LOAD

A. There is no anticipated vehicle loading associated with this bridge. The bridge will be posted on either end with “No Motor Vehicles” signs (R5-3) by the City of Clarksdale.

3.3 WIND LOAD

A. Bridge shall be designed for a minimum wind speed of 125 mph.

3.4 SEISMIC LOAD

A. The seismic design category shall be “C”.
