About this file

This is a tree replacement requirement document issued by the Middlesex County Department of Infrastructure Management, Office of Parks & Recreation in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

The document establishes a mandatory tree replacement formula for contractors who must remove living trees from Middlesex County Parkland. Replacement trees must be equivalent in material volume to trees removed, calculated using a cross-sectional area formula based on diameter at breast height (DBH) measurements. The calculation methodology uses the formula A = πR², where R represents the radius at breast height in inches and π equals 3.14. All replacement trees must comply with terms, conditions, species selections, and planting locations as determined by the Middlesex County Office of Parks and Recreation and the Director of Parks. The example provided demonstrates that removal of one 20-inch caliper DBH red maple tree (314 square inches) requires planting approximately 44 replacement trees at 3-inch caliper DBH (7.07 square inches each) to meet the equivalency requirement. This formula applies proportionally to any tree removal scenarios contractors encounter on county parkland projects.

When a contractor is required to remove a living tree from a Middlesex County Parkland they may be required to replace that tree with an equivalent amount of tree material using the formula described below. All replacement trees will be in accordance with the terms, conditions, species and locations as determined by the Middlesex County Office of Parks and Recreation and the Director of Parks.

Example:

Project A requires the removal of one tree: a 20” caliper DBH red maple tree

Calculation of Total Square Inches Removed:

A = π R² R = Radius at Breast Hight (inches) π = 3.14

• Area Maple = π (20/2)² = inches²

• Area Maple = π (10)²

• Area Maple = 314 square inches

Calculation of Replace Tree Requirement *Assume replacement trees are 3 inch caliper (DBH)

• Replacement trees = A = π R²

• Replacement Trees = π (3/2) ²

• Replacement Trees = 7.07 inches²

Number of Replacement Trees Required X = 314 square inches / 7.07 square inches X = 44.4 trees at 3” caliper DBH

If Project A removes one (1) 20” caliper DBH tree, approximately forty-four (44) 3” caliper DBH trees must be planted to replace it.
