Date: 7 January 2011 Item Nomenclature: GTM ISO Compressed Gas Container and Trailer File Number: 2010.05.07 Rev.1 Requestor: DLA/DESC-M (Robert Gloria/Joseph Bresnok) Superseded Certification Date: 18 June 2010
New Information Summary: Incorporates capability to transport the compressed gas container by itself in a palletized configuration.
Item Description: The subject item is identified to be 9 GTM cylinders supported by a beam structure and carried inside a GTM ISO container that is mounted on a tandem axle trailer manufactured by King Chassis (model # CK-232FB). The approximate dimensions of the container and trailer combination are 282” L x 96” W x 149” H. The gross weight of the container/trailer combination is 44,300 lbs. The trailer has a gross weight rating of 57,000 lbs. The front axle for this configuration is approximately 15,442 lbs with a rating of 22,500 lbs. The rear axle is reported to weigh 15,442 lbs with a rating of 22,500 lbs. The combined landing gear weight is 13,416 lbs. The landing gear has a static capacity of 140,000 lbs. The weight of the trailer by itself is approximately 6,600 lbs. The approximate dimensions of the container by itself are 240” L x 96” W x 102” H. The weight of the ISO container by itself is 37,700 lbs. The container has a CSC rating of 67,200 lbs.

File Number 2010.05.07 Rev.1
Conditions of Certification: The air transportability review of this system was performed based on the dimensions and structural information provided by GTM. The GTM container is certified for air transport when the gas cylinders are empty. Approval for air transport of compressed gases in the GTM container cylinders is contingent upon the Department of Transportation (DOT) issuing a special permit to DLA-DESC verifying that the cylinders comply with AFMAN24-204(I)/DLA 4145.3 requirements. The GTM cylinder support structure, ISO container, and trailer design has been found by ATTLA to meet all of the dimensional, structural, and restraint requirements related to the air transport of the GTM container cylinders when transporting a compressed gas.
1. Maximum Weight for Air Transport:
a. Container/Trailer Configuration:
(1) Gross Vehicle Weight: 46,600 lbs (80% of GVWR)
(2) Axle Limits: Front & Rear – 18,000 lbs (80% of rated capacity)
(3) Landing Gear Limit (per leg): 15,000 lbs (based on shoring dimensions and expected weight)
b. Container Only: 38,000 lbs (aircraft limit based on roller contacts)
2. Item Preparation:
a. The maximum height of the ISO container and trailer combination for C-17 air transport is 149”.
This will provide a minimum clearance of 3” with respect to the aircraft wingbox structure.
b. Tire inflation pressure shall not exceed 100 psi.
c. As an option, this container may be shipped without the trailer, loaded on a 463L three pallet train. The four protruding outside corners of the container shall not contact the pallets or shoring.
Shipper supplied shoring is needed for placement between the bottom longitudinal outside edges of the container and the top surface of the pallet. Shoring shall be a minimum of ¾” thick by 6” wide with a minimum length of 192” and shall be placed between the container and the pallet surface.
d. The shipper has certified that the GTM ISO Compressed Gas Container and Trailer are capable of withstanding a rapid in-flight decompression of up to 8.3 PSI within ½ second without endangering the aircraft or personnel.
e. All equipment shall be prepared, packaged, or mounted such that there is no adverse effect on the functioning of the equipment after being subjected to the aircraft environmental extremes. MIL- STD-810 provides guidance on approved test methods and data gathering techniques
f. All hazardous materials (to include fuel level, batteries, etc.) must be prepared and certified for airlift in accordance with TM 38-250/AFMAN 24-204(I). Do not consider this air transport certification as approval for hazardous materials. Authorization for airlifting hazardous material is the responsibility of 401 SCMS/GUMAA (DSN 787-4503 or COM (937) 257-4503).
3. Loading Instructions:
a. ISO frame and trailer combination may be loaded driven or backed into the aircraft via a prime mover using general loading procedures as listed in the respective aircraft cargo loading manual.
b. Loadmasters and safety observers will monitor critical clearances between landing gear and cargo floor/ramp at hinge adjacent locations during on/off loading operations.
c. Parking shoring is required under the landing gear footpads if the trailer is disconnected from its prime mover and supported by the landing gear during air transport. See paragraph 5 for minimum shoring dimensions required.
d. ISO Container and trailer shall be restrained separately to the aircraft floor per section 4 below.
e. If the container is shipped separately on pallets, it shall be loaded aboard the aircraft via a K-loader, with the aircraft ramp in the coplanar position, utilizing general loading procedures as per the cargo loading manual for each aircraft.
4. Restraint Requirements: The GTM ISO Compressed Gas Container and Trailer and all accompanying cargo must be restrained to meet MIL-HDBK-1791 requirements of 3G forward, 1.5G aft and lateral, and 2G up. In addition, stored or installed equipment must meet these requirements and be capable of withstanding a 4.5G down load. There are a total of 18 tiedown provisions – 10 tiedown rings installed on the trailer frame and the 8 ISO corner fittings. The D-rings affixed to the trailer have a working load limit of 25,000 lbs. Each ISO container corner fitting has the following rated capacities: longitudinal - 67,442 lbs, lateral - 33,721 lbs, and vertical - 67,442 lbs. The trailer and container combination shall be restrained independently using the tiedown configuration shown in Figures 2 and 3, however, the twist lock mechanisms located at each corner of the trailer must be engaged to ensure the two are properly mated during air transport. In addition to the top four corner fittings, the bottom four ISO corner fittings can also be used for restraint if required.

5. Required Shoring Dimensions & Diagrams:
a. Floor Protection: 14” L x 14” W x 2” H. One piece per landing gear leg shall be placed between pad and cargo floor to eliminate metal-on-metal contact.
Required Distribution:
1. Shipper shall give a copy of this certification to the ATOC representative when the item is presented for airlift. This memo shall be part of the official cargo manifest documentation package and shall be briefed to the aircraft loadmaster prior to loading this item.
2. AMC/A3V.
3. SDDC TEA.
