About this file

This is a Special Packaging Instruction (DD Form 2169) for the M240 Machine Gun, 7.62mm, issued by the Department of Defense. The document specifies detailed packaging, preservation, and marking requirements for this military weapon system.

The packaging instruction mandates specific preservation steps including cleaning with MIL-PRF-372 rifle bore cleaner and MIL-PRF-680 solvent, drying with lint-free swabs, and application of medium preservative oil (MIL-PRF-3150). The unit pack configuration requires disassembly of the weapon to remove the buttstock, operating rod assembly, drive spring rod, and barrel, with each component placed in heat-sealed VCI (Vapor Phase Corrosion Inhibitor) bags. Components must be packed in a fiberboard box (40.5" x 11.87" x 7.25" ID) with custom fiberboard blocking and bracing, wrapped in MIL-PRF-3420 VCI paper, and sealed per ASTM D1974, Method B. The instruction specifies two packing levels: Level A using ASTM D6251 corrugated fiberboard containers, and Level B using ASTM D5168 weather-resistant containers secured to 40" x 48" pallets with metallic strapping. All wood packaging materials must comply with ISPM 15 phytosanitary standards and include ALSC-approved heat treatment certification markings. Marking requirements include nomenclature, part numbers, serial numbers on bar code labels, and 2D bar code labels for unique item identification. The document includes detailed technical drawings for receiver holder, barrel and bipod support, and buttstock support components to guide proper packing configuration.
