About this file
This statement of work specifies requirements for the procurement of six diamond window assemblies by the Argonne National Laboratory Advanced Photon Source Upgrade project. The assemblies will include two styles, with two units of one style for 20-ID and 1-ID, and four units of the other style for 20-ID. The assemblies must meet technical specifications for materials, dimensions, aperture sizes and locations, heat transfer capabilities, and interfaces. Delivery is required by July 2024 with fabrication drawings due for approval in March 2024 and monthly progress reports. Acceptance criteria address dimensions, quality certification, and leak and pressure testing.

1. Scope of Work The APS-U Project is procuring a total of six (6) Diamond Window Assemblies . There are two styles of these windows with slight difference. We need qty of two (2) of A320-WN0200 (we call it WN0200 in this document) one to be installed at 20-ID and one to be installed at 1-ID, and need qty of four (4) A320-WN0300 (we call it WN0300) to be installed at 20-ID. This document specifies the details and requirements for detail design, fabrication, QA and delivery of the diamond window assembly.
The sketch we provide in this document shows the key dimensions, such as flange size, component length, cooling tube locations and cooling fittings for the window, aperture size and location and window thickness. Vender will be responsible for detail designing and fabricating the diamond window assemblies according to the key technical spec, material requirement, quality and acceptance requirements outlined in this document.
QA documentation shall be provided with each diamond window assembly.

4. Technical Requirements
Design Specifications
WN0200 consists of two round apertures: one aperture for white beam and one aperture for mono beam. White window has heat load during operation and mono window has no heat load. The maximum heat load on WN0200 white window is 79 Watts in the 0.25 mm thick window with peak power density of 23 W/mm2 in the footprint area of 2.68mm×1.34 mm region The white beam aperture has a physical nominal aperture of 10 mm dia. with minimum clear aperture of 9.5 mm. The mono aperture is 10 mm dia. The window length is 85 mm or less.
WN0300 consists of two round apertures: one for white beam and one for mono beam. White window has heat load during operation and mono window has no heat load. The maximum heat load on WN0300 is 20 Watts with peak power density of 4.1 W/mm2 in the region of 2.2mm×2.2mm. The white beam aperture has a physical aperture of 8.5 mm dia. with minimum clear aperture of 8.0 mm. The window is 0.2 mm thick. The mono aperture is 10 mm dia. The window length is 100 mm or less.
The vacuum side of this WN0300 window will bolt to a valve, so a pump out port is required. A cone shaped built-in mask is required to protect the window brazing joint. The cone inlet is 18 mm dia with outlet aperture of 6.5 mm dia to shadow the 8 mm diamond window.
Table 1 shows the key design parameters for the diamond window that must be met based on the function of the window.

Material Requirements
· The diamond disk for the diamond window must be optical grade, polished, best to preserve x-ray coherence, with thermal conductivity at room temperature equal or greater than 2.0 W/mm°C.
· The white beam window requires heat transfer enhancer to transfer heat from the center of the diamond to the edge of the diamond. The diamond material must be thicker at the edge compare to the center. We suggest at least 0.5 mm thicker. The supplier is responsible to design this transition to ensure the diamond to copper joint is flexible and able to withstand many cycles of heat load from white beam.
· The material for diamond window mounting and cooling block is OFHC copper.
Machining and Dimensions The vendor is responsible for the detail design drawings and machining of all parts. An APS preliminary sketch A320-WN0200 and A320-WN0300 is shown for global dimension reference. Vendor shall do the detail design of each window. Due to the thermal expansion coefficient of copper is 17 times of the diamond. The joint must be flexible in order to withstand many years of service without fatigue failure. The white window require heat transfer enhancement to ensure the edge of the window is thicker than the center of the window for heat transfer purpose.
A conceptual design of the WN0200 is shown in Figure 1 and WN0300 is shown in Figure 2. Only window frame with aperture is shown. The bidder is responsible to propose the details of the window design.

Hydrostatic Test
· Hydrostatic test for the water fittings must be performed at a pressure of 225 psig per ANSI/ASME B31.3. The test should be conducted in conjunction with a flow test to report the flow volume and ensure no blockages. The test shall be conducted for 1 hour and show no visible leaks.
Vacuum Test
· The window operating pressure is 1 bar. One side of the window is UHV and other side will be in atmosphere. The word “vacuum side” and “air side” should be marked on each window flange as shown in Figure 3.
· CVD diamond window assembly must be UHV tight. It must be bakeable to 250 °C.
· The detailed vacuum specification is located in section 3.5 of ANL document APS Engineering Standard – Vacuum Designs (APS-PPR-VAC-000-A017-000128). The final assembly must go through bake out.
Flats on Flanges for Alignment The vacuum side of the window will be bolted to a flange without a bellows in between, so the position between the diamond aperture and the center of the flanges are very important. Flat surfaces of 20 mm wide to be machined on all four sides of top, bottom, left and right. Measurement should be provided from the center of the flange to the flat surface and to the center of the window aperture. The flat surface is shown in Figure 3.
Figure 3. Flat surfaces for alignment and flange markings
Cleaning Vacuum components must be cleaned in compliance with section 3.3 of ANL document APS Engineering Standard – Vacuum Designs (APS-PPR-VAC-000-A017-000128).
QR Codes and Markings on the Window All window assemblies shall be engraved on the flange the words “Vacuum side” and “Air side” along with a specific QR code (5 digits) as shown in Figure 3. The QR code will be emailed to the vendor after order award. All QA documentation shall be traceable back to these codes.
Shipping All flanges must be hermetically sealed to atmosphere using conflat or o-ring style blanks. Silver plated screws must be used to secure the flanges. ONLY silver plated screws are acceptable. These blanks must have a tube to allow for a dry nitrogen backfill which will then be crimped shut or a small valve which can be sealed closed when backfilling is completed. The shipping crate shall be attached to a pallet so that it can be moved using standard handling devices (forklift or pallet jack). They must allow storage of the items for a period of 6 months in an indoor environment. Irreversible indicators that record vertical shock loads of more than 10 G and tilt indicators should be attached to the shipping crates.
Each crate shall be labeled on the outside with the information shown below:
· Part numbers and quantities of enclosed parts
· Recipient: Argonne National Laboratory, Advanced Photon Source Upgrade
· Address: 9700 South Cass Avenue, Argonne, IL 60439
· QR codes of the enclosed parts
· Gross weight of each crate
· Conspicuous arrows to indicate its upright position
5. Reporting Monthly progress reports are required. These reports may be a bulleted list in an email that details the manufacturing progress, issues and mitigations, potential and actual delays and forecast delivery information. Any deviation from the specification (this document, or any of the attached documents) must be communicated in writing via an APSU Supplier Disposition Report Form and approved by the APS-U POC.
