About this file

This document is a set of Questions with Answers from Potential Bidders regarding a federal contract opportunity for Diamond Window Assemblies.

The key details are:

  • The APS-U Project is procuring a total of six (6) Diamond Window Assemblies, with two styles - two (2) A320-WN0200 and four (4) A320-WN0300.
  • The potential bidders asked questions about the required assembly, dimensional drawings, surface finish, and thermal conductivity specifications.
  • The agency (Department of Energy Office of Science) answered that they are looking for the whole assembly, not just the diamond plates, and that the vendor will need to provide a design sketch showing how the diamond will be attached to the copper body. They also specified the required surface finish of less than 5 nm on the top/bottom and that the Total Thickness Variation should be within +/-10% of the nominal thickness.
  • The agency noted they are not providing dimensional drawings, and the vendor will need to propose their own drawing as part of the submission.

Questions Is ANL looking for the whole assembly or just the diamond plates?

Does ANL have a dimensional drawing?

What is the required surface finish polish? Top/bottom and sides.

Answers

We are not asking for optical grade single-crystal diamond. We are asking for poly-crystal CVD diamond. Single-crystal diamond typically has the size of maximum of 10x10 mm and does not have the size we need.

We need the property of thermal conductivity >=2.0 w/mmC. The potential bidder should submit the diamond property sheet including the thermal conductivity for us to tell if the material meets the specification.

We are looking for the whole assembly and not just a diamond plate and the potential bidder need to provide a design sketch to show us how they plan to attach the diamond to the copper body to show that the assembly can withstand cycles of heat load. The joint between the diamond and the copper must be flexible.

All dimensions are listed in the SOW. Argonne is not providing a drawing. The vendor will propose a drawing.

Surface finish should be less than 5 nm (nano meter) top/bottom, no side requirement.

The Total Thickness Variation is specified in the SOW page 5 as +/-10% from nominal thickness.
