Promoting Gender Equality in the National Priority Programs

August 15, 2013

Investments in Women Education: Increased access to education, with over seven million children enrolled in schools, 35% of whom are girls.

Health: Drastic improvements in the quality of health (life exp. increased for women from 44 to 62 in the last decade).

Legislative: Women’s rights have been enshrined in the constitution; Women make up over 25% of all parliamentarians.

Government: Over 19% of the civil service is female, up from 0% ten years ago.

Justice: Increasing number of women are working in the justice systems, including 150 female judges and female prosecutors.

Role in the economy: Over 3,000 formally registered women owned businesses.

Building upon Efforts Underway Promote will provide an estimated 200,000 educated young women with opportunities and capabilities to join the ranks of decision makers and serve as models for a new generation of women leaders.

Why Target These Women Roughly 200,000 female high school and university graduates have benefitted directly from USG and international support over the previous decade—and their numbers are growing each year.

Unleashing the productive potential of these women could greatly improve women’s status and the country’s development prospects during and after Transition.

Currently, opportunities for women to enter and advance within key, mainstream sectors are unavailable.

Promote will enable a “critical mass” of women to assume leadership and decision making positions.

Given their numbers, these women will support indigenous and sustainable solutions for less fortunate women.

Promote Economic Empowerment of Women: Afghan women increase participation in the economic sector by securing employment or establishing/expanding small-to-medium sized businesses/agribusiness.

Women’s Rights Groups and Coalitions: Women’s civil society movement influences public policy and social practices.

Internship program for Women in Government: Women interns gain professional employment in the public sector.

Women’s Leadership Development: Women apply advanced management and leadership skills in public, private and civil society sectors.
