About this file

This technical specification outlines requirements for road and campsite resurfacing work at a national forest campground. The scope of work includes blading and shaping existing roads and campsites, placing a 3-inch base course layer and 2-inch gravel finish layers, constructing concrete valley gutters and drainage berms, and building a water fill station pull through. Measurement and payment methods are defined per linear foot for blading/shaping and per cubic yard for material placement. Compaction testing is required at campsites and along road centerlines. The related federal contract opportunity is for campground improvements at the GAOA Echo Amphitheatre Recreation Site in Carson National Forest, New Mexico, solicited through the Department of Agriculture Forest Service.

SECTION 02101

rOAD/CAMPSITE RESURFACING

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

A. Campground loop and campsite driving/parking surface improvements will include the blading and shaping of the existing campground loop road and campsites in preparation for placement of base coarse and a new gravel driving/parking surface. Additionally, a pull through drive shall be constructed according to the same specifications outlined in this section for a water fill station. This section also includes the construction of concrete valley gutters and drainage berms.

1.2 MEASUREMENT

A. Linear measurements for roadwork will be horizontal along the road centerline.

B. Linear measurements for campsite work will be horizontal along the campsite centerline.

C. Quantity for blading and shaping of road and campsites will be linear along the centerline respectively.

D. Quantity for placement of compacted base coarse for driving/parking surfaces & drainage berms will be per cubic yard.

E. Quantity for placement of gravel for driving/parking surfaces & drainage berms will be per cubic yard.

F. Quantity for construction of concrete valley gutters will be per cubic yard.

G. The actual quantities will be paid for at the contract unit price for each pay item shown in the Schedule of items. Actual quantities are defined as the actual physical quantity of material needed to accomplish the work outlined in this section to deliver a product that is both safe and acceptable. If construction requires a higher quantity of material than what has been shown in the Schedule of items, contractor shall coordinate with the CO for approval prior to construction and/or purchasing and billing.

PART 2 – PRODUCTS

cONTRACTOR SHALL PROVIDE SUBMITALLS INCLUding but not limited to soil proctors, material gradation sheets, compaction curves etc.

2.1 BASE course

a.

Base course shall have a minimum dry unit weight of 138 pounds per cubic foot (lb/ft^3) +/- 10%. Contractor shall provide a soil proctor for base course from product supplier.

2.2 GRAVEL (Campsite Living Units & Electric Pedestals)

A.

Gravel shall be 1/2" minus fractured gravel (unwashed). Contractor shall provide supplier specification for gravel to ensure proper size and type.

2.3 GRAVEL (Roadway, Drainage Berms & Campsites) A.

Gravel shall be 1” - 2” unwashed-crushed gravel. Contractor shall provide supplier specifications for gravel to ensure proper size and type.

2.4

VALLEY GUTTER

A.

Concrete valley gutter shall be constructed with Quikrete High Strength Concrete Mix. Concrete shall be mixed per manufacturer recommendations.

PART 3 – EXECUTION

1.3 Typical road & Campsite soil profile (unless otherwise noted) A. Typical road section shall be comprised of:

1. Finish Surface: 2” layer of compacted 1” – 2” unwashed gravel

2. Road Base: 3” Layer of compacted base coarse

3. Subgrade: Compacted Native Material

1.4 Typical campsite living unit & Electric pedestal soil profile (unless otherise noted)

A. Typical campsite & campsite living unit section shall be comprised of:

1. Finish Surface: 2” layer of compacted 1/2" minus unwashed gravel

2. Base: 3” Layer of compacted base coarse

3. Subgrade: Compacted Native Material

1.5 Blading and shaping

A. Contractor shall blade & shape the existing Campground Loop Road and Campsites in preparation for resurfacing. Finished elevation of road shall be level with the high side of existing terrain. Low side road edge shall be built up with native material to ensure road surface material holds in place. Blading shall ensure that subgrade is compacted and level in anticipation of placing 5” of material on top of subgrade per section 3.2, 3.3 & 3.4 (for campsites).

1.6 base coarse A. Contractor shall place one (1) 3” layer of base coarse on top of compacted subgrade. Base coarse shall be compacted to a minimum of 95% of the dry unit weight. In situations where section shall be built up in exceedance of the typical road section, contractor shall compact in 6” lifts to 95% of the dry unit weight.

B. Contractor shall perform compaction tests at every campsite along the centerline of the Campground loop road and at every campsite. Campsite compaction tests shall occur at a location designated by COR.

C. Contractor shall be responsible for providing water to ensure an adequate soil water content level is maintained for compaction

1.7 Gravel Surface (Roadway, drainage berms & Campsites)

A. Contractor shall place one (1) evenly distributed 2” layer of 1-2” unwashed gravel as a finish surface on top of base coarse layer.

1.8 Gravel Surface (Campsite living Units)

A. Contractor shall place one (1) evenly distributed 2” layer of 1/2" minus unwashed gravel as a finish surface on top of base coarse layer.

B. Gravel shall be compacted to 95% of its maximum compaction as noted by supplier or as approved of by COR.

1.9 water fill station pull through

A. Contractor shall construct a camp spur pull through. Minimum outside radius = 80 FT, minimum inside radius = 80 FT. Spur Width shall be = 16 FT minimum.

B. Fill station shall be considered a campsite and therefore have the same soil profile specified for campsites.

1.10 Bar ditch

spec writer: edit type of method in paragraph below.

A. Contractor shall construct a bar ditch as depicted by flow lines in the construction drawings.

1.11 Drainage berms

A. Contractor shall construct two (2) berms North of the existing Group Shelter. The berm shall consist of a ditch with a 2% downward slope in the direction depicted by flow lines in the construction drawings. Refer to berm details in the construction drawings for the typical berm detail.

1.12 valley gutters spec writer: edit type of method in paragraph below.

A. Contractor shall construct three (3) 4-foot wide valley gutters. Total length may vary based on actual road width at the 3 locations. Refer to construction drawings for locations.

B. Contractor shall construct “lead-outs” after each valley gutter to channel runoff water from the valley gutters to the nearest vegetation cluster(s).

PART 4 – MEASUREMENT & PAYMENT

4.1

MEASUREMENT & PAYMENT

A.

Payment for blading and shaping shall be per linear foot (LF).

B.

Payment for ALL base coarse shall be per cubic yard (CY).

C.

Payment for ALL gravel shall be per cubic yard (CY).

D.

Payment for concrete valley gutter shall be per cubic yard (CY).
