GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING
The conditions below the ground surface cannot be easily predicted without a thorough subsurface exploration and proper evaluation of the data collected. It is essential that the exploration program be planned based on the local geologic conditions, the potential environmental factors, the geotechnical engineer’s experience, and the intended use of the property.
Engineering analyses, evaluation, report preparation and client consultation are the factors that determine if the project will be built with adequate factors of safety without costing the project excess monies because of conservative recommendations.
Experience with local geologic conditions and a fundamental understanding of the planned structure’s interaction with the site’s surface and subsurface conditions are critical components to a successful geotechnical exploration. NOVA’s staff excels at developing “real-world” recommendations and conclusions; all while maintaining constant communication with the design team. Also, since many of our staff members are crossed-trained in environmental consulting, environmental factors are not overlooked when developing geotechnical recommendations.
In order to provide geotechnical recommendations that result in cost-effective foundation design/ construction and a reduced likelihood of construction delays caused by unforeseen conditions, NOVA offers the following services:
• Preliminary and Final Explorations
• Site Characterizations Studies
• Site Preparation and Foundation Specifications
• Slope Stability and Embankment Analysis
• Foundation, Earthwork and Settlement
Evaluations
• Site Specific Seismic Assessment
• Geological Hazard Assessment
• Geo-Environmental Combined Assessments
Field drilling, sampling and testing are offered by our professional staff and through our network of sub-contract drilling firms with which we have developed a strategic relationship. Field exploration and special in-situ testing capabilities that NOVA and our sub-contractors are capable of providing include:
• Low Overhead Drilling and Sampling
• All-Terrain Drill for Adverse Site Conditions
• Over Water Drilling Utilizing Barges and Pontoons
• Maintenance of Traffic (M.O.T.), including:
◦ Certified M.O.T. Supervisors for Development and Supervision of MU TCD Traffic Safety Plans

◦ Menard Pressuremeter and Dilatometer usanova.com 21
CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS TESTING
Construction Materials Testing and Inspection Services, consisting of testing and observation services, typically make up only 1% of the overall construction budget. As a percentage of the total construction budget, no other item as small can have as much impact on the quality of the finished project. Owners, architects, engineers, and general contractors associated with any construction project need to be sure that the construction practices and materials utilized during construction meet the specifications for the project. When these services are performed well, they can save the owner significant money by preventing change orders during construction, and reduce future maintenance and repair costs. Quality control/quality assurance testing and inspection services are key components to ensure that the precise planning and careful design of a project are not lost during construction.
Since the implementation of the International Building Code (IBC) in most of the states we do business, NOVA has been a leader in implementing and educating the construction community regarding the code requirements for testing and inspection services.
Materials testing and inspection services that NOVA routinely provides to the engineering and construction community include:
• International Building Code Special Inspections and Florida Threshold Inspections

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSULTING SERVICES
Whenever industrial or commercial real estate is bought and sold, the physical condition of the property is usually a key factor. If a building is in need of substantial repair or renovation, the buyer will adjust the offer to reflect the cost of making repairs.
In an industrial or manufacturing plant, the prospective buyer will inspect the structures and plant equipment to establish an offer based on condition. But, what about the environmental condition of the buildings and the site? Is there contamination of the buildings, soil or groundwater that might need to be corrected one day? How much would environmental corrective action cost? Who pays? How might environmental problems limit the intended use of the property?
What is the risk and associated liability?
With professional engineers and geologists experienced in soil and groundwater studies, NOVA is prepared to offer more than preliminary evaluations of environmental impact to property. We can provide professional recommendations for site mitigation alternatives when the need arises.
Environmental studies frequently identify conditions that could be interpreted by regulators in various ways.
Our professional staff maintains a current understanding of the local regulatory positions with respect to containment mitigation requirements.
Such an understanding can be useful when real estate transactions must be accomplished within rigid time frames, and review of specific site conditions by regulators is not possible.
