About this file

This Questions and Responses document pertains to the Greenville County, South Carolina Infectious Medical Waste Disposal Services contract, which involves three facilities: the Detention Center, EMS, and Animal Care. The County is establishing a one-year contract with four optional annual renewals, commencing July 1, 2025. The services encompass collection and disposal of infectious medical waste, including sharps, pharmaceutical waste, and biohazard materials across multiple locations. Animal Care generates approximately 5,100 to 6,700 pounds of sharps waste annually, plus minimal pharmaceutical and hazardous waste, with pickups occurring one to two times monthly on an as-needed basis. EMS produces no more than 999 pounds of medical sharps and biohazard waste annually in 18-gallon and 28-gallon cardboard containers, requiring bi-monthly pickups. The Detention Center utilizes approximately 25 containers per month across 16 locations with 28-gallon reusable containers, generating approximately 337 pounds of infectious waste monthly, with pickups scheduled every two weeks.

All facilities currently employ incineration for waste disposal, with no pathological waste generated. Animal Care uses disposable sharps containers in multiple sizes (14-quart, 2-gallon, 3-gallon, and 8-gallon), while the Detention Center maintains reusable 28-gallon containers. The Detention Center classifies all waste as infectious with no chemical waste generation, and EMS collects medical biohazard waste averaging approximately 1,300 gallons annually. The County reserves the right to award the contract to one or more vendors and may add or remove locations as needed based on operational requirements.
