About this file
This document contains questions and answers related to a request for proposals (RFP) issued by the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife for a project to sample bee populations at the Montague Plains Wildlife Management Area in Montague, Massachusetts during the 2019 bee season. The project will require a minimum of 10 fixed transects, with 15 bowls placed at 5-meter intervals along each transect, for a total of 150 samples. The current data is maintained in Excel spreadsheets, and the vendor may need to obtain collection permits, which will be assisted by MassWildlife. Additional data from related projects on Barrens Sites will be provided, though the Montague Plains 2008-10 data is currently being prepared for publication. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended to access the transect locations, which will be primarily near roads within the Wildlife Management Area.
The contract opportunity is identified as DFW-2019-031 Bee Surveys Montague Plains, and is located in Franklin County, Massachusetts. The RFP does not provide details on pricing terms, set-asides, incumbents, funding requirements or sources, or other salient commercial information.

Questions and Answers Project DFW-2019-031: Bee Surveys at the Montague Plains WMA
Q1. Could you please clarify the number of fixed transects to be visited during the 2019 season? Based on the RFP, I calculated 10 transects: Each 75 meter transect will have 15 bowls placed at 5 meter intervals for a total of 150 samples across 10 transects.
A1. That is correct, this project will require a minimum of ten transects.
Q2. Which database software does the project currently use? (e.g. Excel, Access, Specify, etc.)
A2. Current data is in Excel spreadsheets.
Q3. Are any collecting permits required for this work?
A3. It’s still uncertain if collection permits will be needed, but if they are, MassWildlife with assist in obtaining them.
Q4. Will other datasets be provided to enable analyses for Project Objectives #3-5? (e.g. bee community data collected from non-barren sites).
A4. Data from two other related projects on Barrens Sites will be provided. Montague Plains 2008-10 data is currently being worked for publishing and therefore will not be available for at least six month. Transects for non-barrens communities at Montague Plains can be generated by establishing transects in control areas.
Q5. To reach field sites, will an AWD or off-road vehicle be necessary? Are sites primarily accessed by road or by foot? Please provide any information to help us calculate and budget for travel time between sites (maximum travel distance/time between transects).
A5. A high clearance vehicle is recommended for the site, but 4X4 is not necessary. We’ll want a representative sample, but the vendor will establish the location of transects. Most transects will likely be relatively close to roads within the WMA. A gate key will be needed, and provided.
