About this file

The provided document is a comprehensive set of engineering plans and technical specifications for a retaining wall replacement project for the City and County of Broomfield, Colorado. The project involves constructing a Redi-Rock retaining wall along Stoneybrook Drive, with a total wall face area of 424 square feet, requiring 67 cubic yards of gravel backfill, 9 cubic yards of leveling pad, and 83 square yards of filter fabric. The project is located in the Aspen Creek neighborhood, near Aspen Creek K-8 School and Discovery Church, with a project number of 247t0030.

The project requires no direct fees for permits, including grading, building, and public/private improvement permits. Additional environmental permits will be required for cattail removal, including approvals from the Army Corps of Engineers and Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment for dredge, fill, and dewatering activities. The technical specifications detail precise construction requirements, including material specifications for Redi-Rock units, backfill, drainage, and compaction standards. The design uses AASHTO allowable stress design (ASD) methods, with specific soil parameter requirements and stability criteria, including minimum factors of safety for base sliding, overturning, and bearing capacity. The project is scheduled for completion by July 16, 2025, as indicated by multiple document timestamps.

1. General

1.1 The design presented herein is based on a PDF version of the project grading plan prepared by Elevation Consulting Group, Ltd. provided on January 14, 2025, and the limited geotechnical evaluation report prepared by Ground Engineering Consultants, Inc dated February 27, 2025.

1.2 The design presented herein is prepared exclusively for the City and County of Broomfield, and may only be used by the City and County of Broomfield, and the authorized Contractor.

1.3 Alignment of the proposed Redi-Rock wall shall be based on the wall layout in the civil grading plan.

1.4 The Contractor shall verify the location of proposed and existing underground features prior to any grading or excavation.

1.5 Locations and elevations of blocks and wall drain shall be periodically verified by a surveyor during and at completion of construction.

2. Materials

2.1 Precast block shall be Redi-Rock units manufactured by an authorized licensee per Redi-Rock's specifications. 28M/B units can be cast as 28M/B or 28PCM/PCB units.

2.2 All blocks shall be sound and free of cracks or any other defects that would not allow proper construction or affect the strength of the wall.

All face units shall be free of imperfections when viewed from a distance of 10 feet.

2.3 All blocks shall be stored, handled, and installed according to manufacturer's specifications.

2.4 Leveling pad and block infill material shall consist of free draining ASTM C33 No. 57/67 aggregates, and be constructed to the dimensions provided on the Drawings.

2.5 Wall backfill shall consist of ASTM C33 No. 57/67 gravel backfill with a minimum friction angle of 40 degrees, or undisturbed on-site soil with a minimum friction angle of 26 degrees. The gradation, plasticity, and friction angle of fill materials shall be verified prior to and during construction.

2.6 The wall underdrain shall be 4-inch perforated HDPE pipe with perforations sized to prevent migration of wall backfill. Discharge pipe shall be 4-inch non-perforated HDPE pipe.

2.7 Filter fabric shall be Mirafi 140N or approved equivalent.

3. Excavation and Subgrade Preparation

3.1 The excavation shall be carried to the extents necessary to place backfill and gravel fill.

3.2 Temporary excavation slopes shall be graded in accordance with OSHA's guidelines.

3.3 Subgrade shall be excavated as required for placement of the leveling pad, wall drain, and wall backfill as shown on the Drawings or as directed by the Design Engineer.

3.4 Wall subgrade shall be verified by the Geotechnical Engineer.

3.5 Subgrade improvements, if necessary, shall be in accordance with the Geotechnical Engineer.

3.6 The Contractor shall be responsible for controlling seepage by dewatering the retention pond, or the use of temporary cofferdam and sump and pump techniques, as necessary to complete the construction. The Contractor shall be responsible for obtaining applicable permits.

4. Construction

4.1 Precast blocks, leveling pad, backfill, and wall drains shall be installed in accordance with the Drawings and the manufacturers' construction guidelines.

4.2 Backfill shall be placed in uniform lifts not to exceed 9 inches in compacted thickness and graded to nearly level. On-site backfill shall be compacted to at least 95 percent of the maximum standard Proctor density (ASTM D698) within 2 percent of the optimum moisture content.

4.3 ASTM C33 No. 57/67 backfill shall be vibratory compacted.

4.4 Materials placed as backfill in front of the wall or below the bottom of wall shall be compacted to at least 95 percent of the maximum standard Proctor density (ASTM D698) within 2 percent of the optimum moisture content.

4.5 Only light weight hand-operated compaction equipment shall be used within 2 feet behind the back of blocks.

4.6 The first course of blocks shall be placed level on the leveling pad. All blocks shall be checked for proper elevations and levelness.

4.7 Remove all excess aggregate and other materials from the top of the units prior to laying the next course of block units.

4.8 Place the next course of precast block units in running bond with the previous course. Blocks shall be placed fully forward so knob and groove are engaged.

4.9 Continue placing successive courses to the elevations shown on the Drawings. Construct wall by placing the units at each course for the entire length of the wall, if possible.

4.10 Minor trimming the back side of knobs as necessary to adjust wall face batter is acceptable.

4.11 Place filter fabric as shown on the Drawings.

4.12 All underdrain pipe shall be graded at a minimum 2 percent continuous slope to discharge pipes.

4.13 All discharge pipe shall be installed at a minimum of 2 percent slope to daylight at maximum 40 feet on centers and at low points.

5. Drainage

5.1 The wall system and the surrounding areas must be kept relatively dry at all times during and after the construction as much as is feasible.

5.2 In no case should surface runoff be allowed to enter the wall construction areas or water be ponded around the wall during construction.

5.3 At the end of each construction day, the Contractor shall slope the last lift of backfill away from the wall face to direct runoff away from the wall.

5.4 Excavation slopes shall also be protected against erosion to reduce the potential for sloughing and slope failure.

6. Quality Assurance

6.1 The Owner shall retain a qualified engineer and testing agency to perform inspection and materials testing during construction.

6.2 The Owner shall specify the type and minimum frequency of material testing prior to the beginning of wall construction.

6.3 If conformance by the Design Engineer is required, the Wall Contractor shall notify the Design Engineer before initiating construction to coordinate on-site observation and inspection services, and associated fees.

7. Design Criteria

7.1 AASHTO allowable stress design (ASD).
