About this file
This document outlines infection control precautions for a construction project to upgrade and replace the surgery HVAC system and roofing at the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana. During construction, strict measures must be maintained including critical barriers, negative air pressure isolation of the worksite, sealed openings, and designated waste transport routes. Temporary filters may be required if work is near clean air intakes. Upon project completion, the work area must be thoroughly cleaned and the HVAC system restored before terminal cleaning. The related federal contract opportunity is solicitation number 36C25622R0065 for project 667-18-121 issued by the Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Health Administration VISN 16.

1. Complete all critical barriers (i.e. sheetrock, plywood, cover for debris chute)
2. Implement control cube method (cart with plastic covering and sealed connection to work site with HEPA vacuum for vacuuming prior to exit) when tie-in construction begins for access to highest risk areas.
3. Maintain negative air pressure between 4West worksite access and OR/Invasive Radiology within work site with filtration and pressure monitoring.
4. Seal holes, pipes, conduits, and punctures.
5. Strictly minimize construction personnel access to the 4W corridor due to ongoing diagnostic and invasive patient care activities. Preferred access is via the 4West stairwell adjacent to 4W31.
6. If AHU dismantling and installment is within 25 feet of clean air intake for the building, external filters must be installed and routinely changed.
7. Construction Waste Transport
a. If an external trash chute is utilized, ensure that placement is not within 25 feet of a clean air intact. If so, external filters must be installed and routinely changed.
b. Clean outside of waste transport container when visibly soiled.
c. Waste removed through the facility MUST be in tightly covered containers before leaving construction area.
d. Containers without tight fitting solid lids MUST have covering taped in place.
e. Debris removal MUST utilize only the designated construction route.
8. Block off and seal air vents if HVAC system is removed or isolated. Isolate HVAC system in area where work is being done if required to prevent contamination of adjacent areas.
9. Place dust mat at entrance and exit of work area.
10. Coordinate construction personnel access to 3W Operating
Room area with Surgery/OR leadership in advance.
1. Wipe work surfaces with cleaner/disinfectant.
2. Handle construction waste the same as during construction.
3. Do not remove barriers from work area until completed project is inspected by the owner’s Safety Department and
Infection Prevention & Control
Department and thoroughly cleaned by the owner’s
Environmental Services Dept.
4. Remove barrier material carefully to minimize spreading of dirt and debris associated with construction.
5. Vacuum work area with HEPA filtered vacuums.
6. Wet mop area with cleaner/disinfectant.
7. Upon completion, restore
HVAC system where work was performed.
8. Schedule EMS Terminal Clean once all is completed.
