About this file

This is a Department of Transportation project document for the State of Hawaii involving the resurfacing and reconstruction of Kalanianaole Highway from Makai Pier to Hanauma Bay Road (Contract NH-072-1(057)). The scope of work encompasses cold planing, pavement resurfacing, reconstruction of weakened pavement areas, widening of paved shoulders, upgrading grated inlets, upgrading and repairing existing culverts and headwalls, upgrading existing guardrails and end treatments, installation of new crosswalks, centerline and reference survey monuments, milled centerline and rumble strips, pavement markings and signage installation, and adjustment of utility manholes.

The project requires comprehensive coordination with utility providers and adherence to Hawaii Department of Transportation standards. All work must comply with applicable state and federal regulations, including provisions for public safety, traffic management during construction, and environmental protection measures specific to the Oahu coastal area. Contractors should anticipate challenges related to the proximity to Hanauma Bay, a sensitive marine sanctuary, and potential impacts on beach access and tourism during the construction period.
