About this file

This document is an ODOT (Oregon Department of Transportation) Provisional Method of Test (TM 781) for assessing loss of cover aggregate in emulsified asphalt surface treatments. The test method provides a standardized procedure for engineers to evaluate aggregate loss in a 12" x 12" square area, using specific testing apparatus including a tape measure, hand broom, and test aggregate meeting defined requirements (Flakiness Index ≤ 25, passing 3/8" sieve and retained on 1/4" sieve). The procedure involves identifying test locations, sweeping the area, marking a square, packing aggregate particles in areas of loss, counting the particles, and determining the degree of aggregate loss using a predefined table.

The document includes two critical tables: Table 1 quantifies the degree of loss based on the number of aggregate particles (ranging from 0-50 particles), and Table 2 provides assessment guidelines with corresponding actions. For aggregate loss degrees of 0-2, the recommendation is to accept the surface treatment. Losses between 3-6 require retesting 4-6 months before maintenance period end, while losses greater than 6 mandate remediation according to specific specification (SP00710.60(b)). The report must document the location and length of each sublot and partial sublot, along with the degree of stripping, providing a systematic approach to evaluating and maintaining road surface quality.

ODOT Provisional TM 781

Provisional Method of Test for

LOSS OF COVER AGGREGATE

SCOPE

This test method describes a procedure to determine the degree of aggregate loss in an emulsified asphalt surface treatment. If loss of cover aggregate is suspected in any area, the Engineer may perform this provisional test method to verify.

APPARATUS

1. Tape measure and chalk/crayon or template to define a 12” x 12” square.

2. Hand broom.

3. Test aggregate meeting the following requirements:

• Flakiness Index must be less than or equal to 25 according to ODOT Provision Test

Method 782

• Must pass the 3/8” sieve and be retained on the ¼” sieve

PROCEDURE

1. Identify test location. Sweep the test area using a hand broom.

2. Mark out a 12” x 12” square at the test location using a template or tape measure and chalk/crayon.

3. Pack aggregate particles in the areas where aggregate loss has exposed binder within the boundary of the 12” x 12” square. The aggregate should neatly fill the spaces left by the stripped aggregate.

4. Remove and count the number of aggregate particles packed in the 12” x 12” square

5. Determine the degree of loss of cover aggregate for the area from Table 1 and record the result.

6. Repeat for each location where loss of cover aggregate is suspected by the Engineer.

Table 1 - Determination of the Degree of Loss of Cover Aggregate

Number of aggregate Particles Required to Cover Aggregate Loss within the 12" X 12" Square

Degree of Loss of 3/8" Cover Aggregate

0 to 5 1

6 to 10 2 11 to 15 3 16 to 20 4 21 to 25 6 26 to 30 7 31 to 35 8 36 to 40 9 41 to 45 10 46 to 50 11

Table 2 - Assessment of the Degree of Loss of Cover Aggregate

Degree of Loss of Cover Aggregate Action Required

0 to 2 Accept

3 to 6 Retest and reassess 4 to 6 months before the end of the maintenance period.

Greater than 6 Remedy required according to SP00710.60(b).

REPORT

• The degree of stripping for each sublot and partial sublot
