About this file

This document is an unclassified overview of OpenStreetMap (OSM), a crowd-sourced mapping data service provided by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) through its GEOINT Services initiative. The overview details OSM's key capabilities, which include weekly updated open-source mapping datasets accessible across multiple security domains (NIPRnet, SIPRNet, JWICS), and four primary interfaces: Nominatim (name/address search), Base Map (tiled web maps), Overpass (feature query service), and Open Source Routing Machine (driving directions).

The document highlights OSM's benefits for agencies, such as providing up-to-date mapping information without costly investments, augmenting existing internal content with transportation and points-of-interest data, and offering multiple map tile styles (Standard, Bright, Humanitarian). Users can access OSM through the GEOINT App store on different security domains, with support channels available via email and RocketChat for each domain. The service supports various technical interfaces including Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) in formats like JSON, GeoJSON, and XML, enabling integration into different geospatial workflows and analytical tools.

At-a-Glance Overview The Pixia Imagery Suite is a group of cloud-based imagery exploitation applications that gives users easy and rapid access to large volumes of data in their required formats. The suite consists of HiPER LOOK® Foundation Service, HiPER CLOUDTM Imagery Service and HiPER STARE® Wide Area Motion Imagery (WAMI) Service.

► Access to high-speed data in a web browser or third-party applications such as ESRI ArcMap, Quick Terrain Reader and QGIS

► Visualization of map data, high-resolution imagery and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) over disadvantaged networks and thin clients — all without having to download a single file

► Streamline and automate analytic workflows - Access data via Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) web services vs. downloading datasets

► Application Programming Interfaces (API) – Expose data for use in variety of workflows (i.e.

machine-learning algorithms, computer-vision tools and object-recognition workflows)

► Ability to save data in different formats for future uses

► Filtering and exportation of LiDAR data for analysis, including line-of-site assessments and helicopter landing zone evaluations

The Pixia Imagery Suite The following are descriptions of the three components of the Pixia Imagery Suite and the ways they can be used to rapidly access foundational and temporal GEOINT data from commercial or government platforms.

What Is GEOINT Services?

The GEOINT Services (GS) initiative is NGA’s delivery of geospatial content and analytics through commonly used, cloud-based geospatial tools. GEOINT services are web-based tools and data that allow customers to find, get, use, and contribute geospatial capabilities, data, and best practices.

GEOINT services are available to use across the enterprise.

What capabilities are available for mission users?

►Big-data processing and analytics

►Editable maps of the world

►Enhanced collaboration

►High-performance spatial analytics

►High-speed streaming of imagery

►Integrated geospatial content services from multiple sources

How can users access GEOINT services?

NIPRnet: https://home.gs.mil SIPRNet: https://home.gs.smil.mil JWICS: https://home.gs.ic.gov/HiPER LOOK® Foundation Service is a data-access solution used to catalog, organize and share large volumes of geospatial data and imagery via Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) services like Web Map Services (WMS), Web Map Tile Service (WMTS), Web Coverage Service (WCS), and Keyhole Markup Language (KML).

These tools provide operators quick access to enterprise scale geospatial data, through a variety of Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) tools, also available in disconnected or expeditionary environments.

Users access data via web services, eliminating the need to download large files in limited bandwidth environments. Millions of individual files are consolidated into a single layer displaying massive amounts of high-resolution imagery, LiDAR, and other types of data from government systems, commercial sensors and Five Eyes (FVEY) partners.

GEOINT Services | Pixia Imagery Suite Rapid Imagery Access and ExploitationGEOINT Services | OpenStreetMap (OSM) Crowd-sourced Mapping Data Service

OpenStreetMap (OSM) is an open-source product that relies on a diverse community of mappers, cartographers, and analysts using portable GPS devices, remotely sensed images, and other sources of knowledge to compile up-to-date, mapping information. Data generated by OSM is its primary output, not maps. The OSM capability is replicated across all security domains to provide access to up-to-date, crowd-sourced mapping data. OSM’s tile retrieval service features different projections (Web Mercator & Plate Carrée), styles (Bright, Default & Humanitarian) and a variety of interfaces for users to leverage and benefit from the OSM data.

Benefits of OpenStreetMap ► Provides weekly up-to-date instance of the open-source OSM dataset

► Enables agencies to access OSM data without costly investments to develop and maintain their own instances

► Augments NGA’s existing internal content offerings with additional transportation and points-of-interest data

Nominatim Nominatim (from the Latin, ‘by name’) is a tool to search OSM data by name and address and to generate synthetic addresses of OSM points (reverse geocoding). Nominatim indexes named (or numbered) features with the OSM data set and a subset of other unnamed features (pubs, hotels, churches, etc.).

Base Map Base Map provides an up-to-date instance of the open-source OSM dataset through simple URL’s to tiled web maps. Base Maps supports map tile access using the OSM X/Y/Z Application Programming Interface (API) format and the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Web Map Tile Service (WMTS) API format.

Featured OpenStreetMap Interfaces

Overpass Overpass is a feature query service that serves up custom selected parts of the OSM map data in variety of search possibilities. Overpass acts as a database backend for various services.

Open Source Routing Machine (OSRM) OSRM allows users to generate turn-by-turn driving directions between two geographic locations. It returns the shortest path on road networks. Only the car/driving profile is available.

Search terms are processed first left to right and then right to left if that fails

Both searches will work:

“Pilkington Avenue, Birmingham” or “Birmingham, Pilkington Avenue”

Search results and feature details can be viewed interactively, or retrieved via an API in JSON, GeoJSON, GeocodeJSON, or XML
