IDENTIFICATION OF HISTORICAL AND UNIQUE MATERIALS
Adding to the Directory of History of Medicine Collections
1. Survey libraries within the Region to see if they, or archives or museums that are part of their institution, have medically related unique and historical important collections of books, serials, archives, manuscripts, oral histories, prints and photographs, audiovisuals, historical medical artifacts, or similar cultural heritage resources.
2. Determine whether these libraries:
a. are open to the public;
b. would serve these unique and historical collections to public patrons, upon presentation of a valid request;
c. would answer reference requests on their collections; and
d. in accordance with their policies, would provide limited interlibrary loan service of materials in these collections.
3. If these conditions are met, ensure that the repository submits or updates a complete and accurate entry for NLM’s Directory of History of Medicine Collections: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/hmd/directory/index.html.
