Waste storage room inspections are to be done weekly whether you have waste in storage or not. Simply check “no waste in storage” box if no waste is currently in the waste room. When making observations and remediating actions, pay attention to the following issues:
Signs (Hazardous Waste Storage Room):
- (No Smoking, Matches or Open Flames( and (Hazardous Waste Storage, Unauthorized Personnel Keep Out( signs are posted.
Containers in Storage:
- All containers have a chemical waste tag attached, are labeled with constituents and the date placed in the Hazardous Waste Storage Room. - The words “hazardous waste” are on each hazardous waste container. (small “hazardous waste” labels attached or words written)
- Waste containers are closed when not being added to. There is no evidence of leaks or spills in the waste room. Do not overfill waste containers.
- No hazardous waste is stored in the waste storage room longer than 90 days. [This does not include time the waste container was stored in (satellite accumulation( (in the lab, at the site of generation.)]
Containment (pans, berms, walls, dikes, etc.):
- Wastes are provided with chemical resistant containment areas capable of containing the volume of the largest container or 10% of the total volume being stored in that containment area.
Waste Segregation:
- Incompatible wastes are segregated from each other in separate containment areas. (e.g. acids from bases; oxidizers from organics; cyanides and sulfides from acids; water-reactives from aqueous wastes) [it’s preferable to “satellite accumulate” these items to avoid hazard segregation mistakes]
- Ignitable and reactive wastes are separated from sources of ignition or reaction. (e.g. sparks, open flames, heat sources)
Emergencies:
- Telephone is near Hazardous Waste Storage Room (with emergency numbers posted). Fire alarm and fire extinguisher are nearby for emergencies. Eyewash and safety shower are near the Hazardous Waste Storage Room. Spill cleanup supplies and chemically resistant PPE are available.
