About this file

This Addendum No. 2, issued by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) on October 23, 2026, provides clarifications and revisions to the contract documents for the Boden Lane Bridge Replacement project in Natick (Federal Aid Project No. HIP(NGB)-003S(965)X, N-03-012). The project involves bridge replacement work over CSX/MBTA infrastructure. The bid opening is scheduled for Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. Bidders must acknowledge receipt of Addendum No. 2 in their proposal files before submission. The addendum addresses three substantive questions raised by prospective bidders regarding drilled shaft specifications and payment classifications.

The addendum provides specific clarifications for bidding purposes: (1) bidders should assume 0 to 5 rock sockets may be required for shaft construction, (2) W36x160 piles should be assumed to require 48-inch drilled shafts rather than 36-inch shafts as initially listed, and (3) temporary HMA pavement for pedestrian access will be measured and paid under bid item 472 (Temporary Asphalt Patching) rather than bid item 702 (Hot Mix Asphalt Sidewalk or Driveway). These responses directly impact cost estimation and scheduling for prospective bidders preparing their proposals for the $12.898 million project.

Questions and Responses Addendum No. 2, October 23, 2026

MAS Building and Bridge e-mail dated October 23, 2026.

Question 1.) Bid Item 996.4 Specifications state, “If bedrock is encountered above the proposed bottom of shaft, then a rock socket must be provided to achieve the minimum Pile Tip Elevation shown on the Contract Drawings, or a minimum rock socket depth of 5 feet, whichever is deeper”. Please provide some direction, for bidding purposes, a count of the number of potential rock sockets to be performed on the wall construction. Rock sockets involve different tooling and possible equipment to install which would significantly add costs and increased schedule durations.

Response 1.) Please assume 0 to 5 rock sockets for the purposes of bidding.

Question 2.) Bid Item 996.4 Specifications, under the Basis of Payment within the schedule of payment, lists 24-inch and 30-inch drilled shafts. While we can assume that was meant to be 36” as shown on the Soldier Pile Table on sheet 69 of 92, there are (9) each W36x160 pile. These W36 piles will not fit into a 36-inch hole. Please provide shaft sizing for these piles for bidding purposes.

Response 2.) Assume a 48-inch drilled shaft for the W36x160 piles.

Question 3.) Refer to drawing sheets 24-27 of the "Temporary Traffic Control Plan". Please confirm temporary HMA pavement for pedestrian access will be measured and paid under bid item 702 "Hot Mix Asphalt Sidewalk or Driveway". If so, please check quantity of that Bid Item.

Response 3.) Temporary HMA pavement for pedestrian access will be measured and paid for under bid Item 472. Temporary Asphalt Patching.
