About this file
This document is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) file for a federal contract opportunity for the USNS WILLIAM MCLEAN (T-AKE 12) Vessel Repair Availability (VRA) scheduled for April 2026 under contract number N6817126QN006. The file contains 29 bidder questions with corresponding responses from the government across 11 different work items, addressing technical clarifications, material specifications, work procedures, and logistical requirements for various ship maintenance and modification tasks.
The work items span multiple maintenance categories including bilge preservation, deck covering installation, handrail replacement, kingpost preservation, ladder modifications, light bracket work, kick pipe and stuffing tube replacement, deck grating installation, and pipe bracket replacement. Key responses address material specifications (304L stainless steel for handrails, 4x4x3/8 inch and 2x2x¼ inch steel angles for platform modification), work heights (16 feet for most exterior work), dimensions (4-foot width for deck grating, 50 feet cable length estimates), and operational constraints. Notable clarifications include confirmation that Main Diesel Engine overhauls will have separation distance from concurrent preservation work, pressure washing is essential for kingpost work, stanchions are welded directly to deck, and contractors must provide their own water while the vessel supplies 120V electrical power for portable tools. The government indicated that photos were previously provided in work item files, additional drawings will be supplied by DoDSAFE, and condition reports must be submitted by contractors for various penetration and structural assessments.
