SAFETY SUMMARY
GENERAL SAFETY NOTICES
The following general safety notices supplement specific warnings and cautions appearing elsewhere in this manual. General and specific precautions must be understood and applied during operation and maintenance.
The Commanding Officer or other authority will issue orders as deemed necessary for any situation not covered in the general and specific safety precautions.
KEEP AWAY FROM LIVE CIRCUITS
Operating personnel must observe all safety regulations at all times. Do not replace components, make adjust-ments, or perform internal equipment maintenance without first securing electrical power. Dangerous potential may exist when the electrical power is in the “OFF” position because of charges retained by capacitors. Before touching, always secure electrical power and discharge the circuit by shorting through a load to ground with a shorting probe.
DO NOT REPAIR OR ADJUST ALONE
Under no circumstances should any person reach into or enter equipment enclosures for the purpose of servicing or adjusting equipment except in the presence of personnel capable of rendering aid.
FIRST AID
An injury, no matter how slight, should never go unattended. Always obtain first aid or medical attention imme-diately.
ENERGIZED EQUIPMENT
Before working on energized equipment, ensure against grounding. If possible, make repairs/adjustments with one hand, leaving the other hand clear of the equipment. Never work alone.
MOVING EQUIPMENT
If equipment must be repaired/adjusted while in motion, a safety watch shall be posted. The safety watch must have a full view of the repair/adjustment operation and immediate access to controls that can stop the equipment in motion.
SPECIFIC SAFETY NOTICES
The specific safety warnings and cautions summarized below appear in appropriate chapters of this manual. Each is referenced to the text page on which it appears.
A WARNING is an operating or maintenance procedure, practice, condition or statement which, if not strictly observed, could result in injury or death to personnel.
A CAUTION is an operating or maintenance procedure, practice, condition or statement which, if not strictly observed, could result in damage to, or destruction of, equipment or loss of mission effectiveness.
xi xii
The following warnings and cautions appear in the text of this volume and are repeated here for emphasis.
Before taking on fuel, secure the smoking lamp. Ensure no flame-producing equipment operating within 50 feet of the fueling area. Have fire fighting equipment readily available.
All fuel spills should be mopped up immediately. (Page 4-4)
Failure to follow safety guidelines when taking on and removing fuel may result in damage to the equipment and injury to the crew. (Page 4-4)
Exercise caution around the transmission control levers. Any accidental movement of the control lever could cause unexpected movement of the boat and possible injury to personnel.
(Page 4-8)
Alert crew and passengers to expect movement of the boat prior to initiating a drive system check. (Page 4-9)
Exercise caution that legs and feet do not become entangled in anchor line while line is paying out. (Page 4-12)
In the event the vessel is holed or of a catastrophic hull failure, all-hands should don life saving equipment, contact the appropriate authority, then commence/continue with emergency proce-dures as required. (Pages 4-13, 4-19)
If practicable, warn the passengers and crew before initiating the emergency stopping procedure to minimize the possibility of injury from falls or loose gear. (Page 4-19)
To prevent injury or death, all personnel must remain clear of the bow or stern while conducting towing operations. When being towed or while towing, the tow line is subject to strain and may part. (Page 4-19)
All personnel must move into the cabin or forward to the bow deck when towing another craft, the aft cabin door closed, and the aft cabin (crew) seats unoccupied. (Page 4-19)
All personnel must move into the cabin or to the aft deck while being towed. (Page 4-20)
Wear protective glasses or goggles to protect the eyes from a solution spray or splash. Protective clothing should also be worn. (Page 5-3)
To prevent injury or death, ensure the engines are secured and the battery disconnect switches turned off prior to performing periodic inspection. Tag: OUT-OF-SERVICE. (Page 6-1 )
To prevent injury or death, ensure the engine is secured and the battery selector switches are turned off. Tag: OUT-OF-SERVICE. (Page 6-8)
 - Continued
Under no circumstances should repair or adjustment of energized equipment be attempted alone. The immediate presence of someone capable of rendering aid is required. Before making adjustments, be sure to protect against grounding. If possible, adjustments should be made with one hand, with the other hand free and clear of equipment. Tag electrical system: OUT- OF-SERVICE. (Page 6-8)
Never hook a boat hook into the clothing to retrieve a person from the water. If you inadvertently catch the collar, strangulation can occur, or a sudden, unexpected movement of the boat or person can cause injury. Allow the person to grasp the hook on his own, if you must use the hook. (Page 7-1)
Mercury or Mercury based compounds will result in severe corrosion of this aluminum hull.
Mercury in bilge will result in extreme corrosion. Do not paint this hull with either Mercury or Copper based paints. Do not paint areas purposely left unpainted. Keep Mercury filled instruments, such as thermometers, batteries, or ammunition having fulminate of mercury primers off this boat. Be certain that no item brought on board or used for repair or painting contains Mercury or Mercuric compounds. (Page 2-6)
Fuel Stripping should be done prior to running the engine and filling the tank. Failure to remove water from the fuel will damage the engine. (Page 4-3)
Failure to clean stripping pump of all diesel residue after use will result in damage to the neoprene components of the pump. (Page 4-4)
Failure to replace a leaking water seal will resut in damage to waterjet bearings and other components. (Page 4-5)
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a navigational tool that must be used in conjunction with current charts for the area of operation, visual checks, and common safe navigation practices. Failure to use all navigation tools and aids could result in damage to the boat, other boats, and injure personnel. (Page 4-6)
After an aborted start attempt, do not initiate a restart until the starter motor stops rotating.
Serious damage can result if the switch is turned before the starter motor has come to a complete stop. (Page 4-8)
Do not hold the switch in the start position for more than 20 seconds or the starter motor may overheat. (Page 4-8)
Do not race engine immediately after starting. (Page 4-8)
Do not idle the engine for more than ten (10) minutes as damage to the injectors, piston rings, and valves will occur. (page 4-8)
Do lower bucket (reversing duct) if engine exceeds idle speed. (Page 4-9) xiii xiv

All vessels must observe NO-WAKE and speed restricted zones to minimize damage to vessels and marinas while transiting sensitive areas. Coordinate with the U.S. Coast Guard, local officials, and/or other affected parties if it is necessary to conduct wake generating events in downtown harbors, restricted inland waters, or waterfront communities. (Page 4-9)
Recommended cruising speed is 200 rpm below maximum rpm (3000 rpm). Running at continuous full speed causes excessive wear and strain on engine and drive components. (Page 4-9)
Never lower the waterjet bucket (reversing duct) when the boat is planing. Doing so may cause injury to personnel and/or equipment damage. (Page 4-9)
Avoid sudden increase in engine speed when operating at slow speed in shallow water. Avoid sharp turns when operating in shallow water. Reduce engine speed when traveling through floating debris. (Page 4-10)
Do not overrun anchor line while lowering anchor.
