INTRODUCTION

The Dead-front T-ATF Switchboards have a seven section welded steel frame\'/ork. Steel panels are attached to this structure and used to support and house meters, circuit breakers, switches, indicator lights, rheostats, resistors, fuseholders, etc. The location of the equipment, is such that all com ponents requiring monitoring, adjustment, manual setting, etc., can be operated from the front of the switchboard without opening the hinged or bolted panels. All other components are mounted within the switchboard enclosure. A drip shield c covers the entire assembly.

Nameplates are provided adjacent to each piece of eqUipment on the front panels. All nameplates are etched aluminum with black lettering, as applicable to the component identified:

a) Circuit name and number of equipment.

b) Load amperes and fuse ratings or circuit breaker trip rating. '

The operating handles of all circuit breakers protrude through openings in the front panels so that the breakers may be man ually operated from the front of the switchboard when the front panels are in the closed position. Push buttons are provided to operate motorized breakers.

I i

All bus works are installed in accordance with IEEE #45. The bus assemblies are designed and braced so as to withstand the thermal and magnetic stresses resulting from short circuits.

All bus bar connections are in accordance with IEEE #45.

Phase identification A, B, and C.

is marked on the bus by capital letters

I All wiring between the front hinged panels and the frame work is formed in the shape of a loop to provide more flexibility when opening the panels. Terminal boards are located behind the main generator panels for termination of switchboard wiring and for connection of ship's cabling.

I Fuses are replaceable from the front by opening the hinged doors and all circuits are identified by adjacent nameplates.

FREQUENCY METER KR3-241

The AC Voltmeters, Ammeters and Frequency meter are Westing house Type 241, 4~ inch square instruments. These meters are designed specifically for control and distribution switch boards. The meter operates on the iron repulsion principle with air damping.

This type of movement utilizes a mechanism that combines the attraction and repulsion principles of operation. A fixed vane and two adjustable vanes of carefully determined con figuration are mounted inside of a field coil which, when energized magnetizes these vanes and moves them on the pivoted shaft.

The fixed vane exerts a force of the taper, or up-scale.

1-2 WATTMETER

The Wattmeters are Westinghouse Electric Corp., Type KP-241, 4~ inch square, instruments. These meters are designed specifially for control and distribution switchboards.

The meter incorporates the use of the "Hall" generator watt transducer. A "Hall" crystal is mounted in the air gap of an electromagnet with a current circuit supplying the energy to the electromagnet and a potential circuit connected to two opposite sides of the "Hall" crystal. Output of the ele ment is derived from the two sides of the crystal at right angles to the potential input. This output is pulsating D-C which is measured by a conventional permanent-magnet, moving coil instrument mechanism.

1-3 SYNCHROSCOPE

The synchroscope is a Westinghouse Electric Corp. KI-241, indicating instrument. The instrument consists of a stand ard 2-phase winding that is connected in conjunction with a moving i~on clement which has an independent exciting coil.

The 2-phase winding is connected to one phase of .the incoming machine through a phase-splitting network which produces a rotating field. The exciting coil is connected to the cor responding phase of the running machine, and the moving vanes are thus polarized by the resulting field. The action of these two fields is such that the vane will indicate the phase difference. Thus sunchronism is indicated when the instument pointer is stationary and on the scale index.

1-4 INSTRUMENT DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION

Application The Type K-241 instruments have been designed to achieve the ultimate in reli ability and performance. They are relatively expensive, reflecting the cost of that achievement. Instruments of this class are recommended for use on electric utility switchboards and control panels for similar industrial service.

Selection of the Type K-241 instruments is indicated whenever there is a need for fre quent accurate, quick readings and where failure in an instrument circuit could affect an associated critical circuit. This is usually the case where current and potential transformers or transducers are shared with devices having protective or control functions.

Standards The Type K-241 instruments comply with ANSI Standards C39.1 for 1 % class switchboard instruments. I n such areas as relate to shock, vibration, friction, repeat ebility and electrical losses most K-241 types will exceed these specifications, be cause of the improvements inherent in the unique Westinghouse taut-band design.

Features Taut- Band Suspension All Type K-241 instruments, except those which may rotate continuously, use the Westinghouse-perfected taut-band suspen sion. Instruments incorporating this feature are identified by the trademark "t/Id.®. This suspension is a commercial adaptation of the one developed by Westinghouse for Navy HI-Shock service. The taut-band suspension instrument has certain unique advantages over the conventional pivot and jewel types:

1. It eliminates friction, giving better accu racy and almost perfect repeatability.

2. It gives top performance under adverse conditions of shock and vibration.

3. It permits mounting on apparatus with out fear of damage in shipment.

4. It reduces maintenance, thereby saving money throughout the lifetime of the instrument.

5. It assures longer life, reducing annual depreciation and replacement costs.

6. It has greater sensitivity, reducing pow er burdens on circuits being measured.

Mechanisms Type K-241 instruments are built with per manent-magnet moving-coil mechanisms for all direct current and rectifier types, as well as for those employing self-contained or external transducers. For the direct measurement of alternating current the mechanisms combine the attraction and repulsion iron-vane principles. Both types are built with taut-band suspensions. The power factor meter and the synchroscope are of the rotating vane type with pivot and jewel bearings.

Full View Design To facilitate quick, accurate reading, even under adverse conditions, all K-241 instru ments feature the Westinghouse "full view" design. The glass is flat, reducing light reflection to minimize the need for non-glare glass. The dial scale is beveled so that there is no dial shadow, making it possible to read the instrument from a 60-degree angle.

High Overload Capacity While the exact overload capacities vary with ratings, the K-241 instruments gen erally will withstand momentary overloads in excess of industry standards without sustaining damage. For ac instruments this overload capacity is in excess of 35 times normal current and" for dc it is in excess of 1 50 times. Therefore, it is permissible to select instruments to read at a preferred three-quarters scale at normal current and yet permit "pegging" the instrument dur ing high-current transient conditions.

Styling The K-241 instruments match other West inghouse switchboard components in ap pearance.

Construction Features

Primary Opening The large primary opening is adequate for bus bar or cable and is particularly suitable for extra turns when required in multiple ratio applications.

Core and Coils The ring type core is assembled within an insulating shell and is toroidally wound with a distributed secondary winding. The whole assembly is then completely enclosed in molded rubber insulation.

Secondary Terminals The secondary terminals are stud type.

Markings Complete identification along with ratings and polarity marker are permanently molded into the body of the transformer.

Mounting The ECI can be flush mounted to panel or platform by means of bolts through any pair of mounting holes provided in the body of the transformer. Steel mounting feet with hardware are also available, as a separate item. to mount the transformer in an upright position with secondary terminals in either a vertical or horizontal plane.

Instructions for Use of Eel as a Variable Ratio Transformer The nameplate rating of the Type ECI current transformer is based on the condition that the primary conductor will be passed once through the transformer opening. The rating can be reduced in even multiples by looping this conductor two or more times through the opening. A transformer having a rating of 200 to 5 amperes will be changed to 50 to 5 amperes if four loops or turns are made with the primary cable as illustrated in Figure 1.

Changes in rating can also be accomplished by means of external turns added to or sub tracted from the secondary winding. Due to the relatively large number of turns in this winding, these changes occur in small steps.

Figure 2 shows how turns may be added to the secondary winding by connecting to the "non-polarity" (X2) terminal stud and wind ing on turns in the direction of the arrow.

Figure 3 shows how turns can be subtracted from the secondary winding by connecting to the "polarity" (Xt) terminal stud and winding on turns in the direction of the arrow.

A frequent application of the window type current transformer is for use with'a 5 amp ammeter in motor load measurements. The same meter can be used for different size motors by making ratio adjustments as de scribed above. The table on page 4 can be used to select the desired ratio and to deter mine the necessary primary and/or second ary turns for converting one of the standard rated transformers to this value.

Calculations for this application are illus trated in the example below:

1. Determine the full load current of the motor, Le., 140 amperes.

2. Determine full scale marking'of meter dial, Le., 0-150%.

3. Determine primary current by multiplying the motor full-load current by the full scale meter marking, then dividing by 100.

Example: 140 X 100 = 210 Amperes

4. Use the table on right to determine the number of primary and secondary turns needed for the particular transformer available.

Example: 200:5 ampere transformer - use 1 -turn primary and add two turns to secondary; 400:5 ampere transformer use two turns primary and add four turns to secondary.

SECTION 1 ~_GENERAL INFORMATION

TYPE W-2 WESTINGHOUSE ROTARY SWITCHES

1-5 CONSTRUCTION

Instrument and control switches are similar in construction and space requirements and differ only in the method of operating the contacts. Contacts on all switches are of the direct acting type, which have gained an enviable record for reliability.

The body of the switch is of unit construction and uses glass polyester insulating material as a housing for the contacts. This insures maximum electrical insulation between contacts, requires a minimum of space, and yet allows ample room for wiring.

The first unit of every switch includes a snap action posi tion locator in the instrument switch, or a spring return assembly in the control switch. The terminals are separated by barriers which are a part of the unit housings and con sists of screws which match standard switchboard eqUipment •.

SHAFT - A steel operating shaft runs through the various units.

CONTACTS - Both the moving and stationary contacts are made of bronze alloy combining high conductivity with mechanical strength. They are silver plated and of ample cross sec tion to dissipate heat quickly and effectively, thereby preventing welding. Tests have proved these contacts to have an exceptionally low resistance, even after interruption of high currents. Good contact pressure is assured by means of compression springs which carry no current. Because the contacts are enclosed, there is little possibility of dirt or dust affecting the operation of the switch.

DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION

e Application The Type W-2 switch is designed for use as an instru ment. control or general purpose switch. It is compact. yet of sufficient size to provide long. trouble-free service when ap plied within the specified ratings.

Design flexibility of internal parts and con tacting. plus external jumpering 01 the con tact studs affords almost limitless switching combinations for relatively few standard components. The design flexibility is pro vided in the basic switch styles. A complete switch is made up of a basic switch style.

one of several styled handles. a nameplate connector diagram style and a nameplate.

The W-2 switch may be ordered as a single style unit where such a style meets a specific application. Where a single listed style does not meet a specific application. the desired switch may be ordered by specifying the re quired styled components.

Instrument Switches: Maintained con tact type for use with all classes of electrical instruments. relays. meters. and for perform ing various circuit combinations. Designed for panel mounting and equipped with handles for manual operation.

Control Switches: Momentary contact type being spring return to the original or "off" position. For use with circuit breakers and other electrically controlled apparatus.

Panel mounting. Handles for manual oper ation.

The Type W-2 switch can be furnished with a tumbler pin keylock. Such lock can be assembled either to the right or to the left of the switch unit on the horizontal center line, or, as is considered standard, above the switch unit on the vertical center line as shown in the illustration. The unit is so de signed as to permit locking the switch in anyone or in each of several positions. The position or positions in which a switch is to be locked must be specified on order.

The style nUrT]bers shown in this bulletin apply to switches for mounting on l' - Yo inch thick panels only. Switches for mount ing on thicker panels may be ordered as "similar to" a desired style except for thick panel.

Design Features General Construction The W-2 switch consists essentially of an operating handle, face plate, control hous ing, contact frame assembly and rotor assem bly. It can be built upin any number of stages from 1 to 9, which stages are clamped to· gether and to the control housing by two tie bolts. A steel operating shaft ties the con tact rotors together. A metal cover on the rear holds the position stop pins, retains the shaft and provides basic switch identifica tion. For push or pull switches, the metal cover is replaced by a polycarbonate cover which houses the pull-out mechanism.

Switch Positions Each switch has a minimum of two and a maximum of twelve rotary positions with a 30· throw between positions, irrespective of the number. Each rotary position coin cides precisely with the nameplate markings.

The degree of throw between positions is fixed and cannot be changed. The number of positions of each switch can be altered by removing the rear cover and changing the position of the "stop" pin or pins located in the rear housing spacer. I n addition to rotary motion, the W-2 switch can be provided with a lateral movement (push-pull) of the rotor.

Contact Frames Two contact frame sizes are available; the half frame with six sets of contacts; three sets on the top at 11, 12 and 1 o'clock posi tions and three sets on the bottom at 5, 6 and 7 o'clock positions. The full frame with 12 sets of contacts, each set located at 30· intervals around its perimeter as are the numbers on a clock. The contact frames are made of glass polyester insulating matarial.

Contacts Switches are usually referred to as "so many stages long". For a W-2 switch, a stage of contacts consists of a contact frame (either 6 or 12 contact sets) and a rotor.

At every position location on the frame, there are two contact terminal studs in line (a set) per stage. Each of thase studs is one piece, made of bronze alloy and silver plated.

Rotors The rotors are standard in design and hold the roller contacts. Each rotor, made of glass polyester insulating material, rotates inde pendently between the stage spacer plates.

The rotor assembly is equipped with one to six rollers (as determined by the required circuitry) each of which makes contact with two adjacent stationary terminal studs to complete a circuit and so affording a double, series break contact. The silver-plated bronze alloy roller contacts provide a rolling, wiping action, are self-aligning on assembly and require no adjustment of contact pressure for the life of the switch.

Contact Flslllblllty Basic "you wire it" flexibility is available in the Type W-2 switch. While the internal con tacting is standardized for each basic type of switch; such as ammeter, voltmeter, circuit breaker, etc., by using available insulated jumpers, connections between external switch terminals can be made to obtain the desired contacting for a specific application.

This minimizes the number of basic styled switches that otherwise would be required.

Switch Dial The Type W-2 switch dial consists of two parts; i.e., a dial plate and a nameplate.

The standard control switch dial plate is die cast aluminum, with rad and green target parts, where required, and serves as the base for mounting the nameplate. The nameplate is made of a white ABS material on which is stamped in black the desired position mark ings.

Handles Handles for the Type W-2 switch are made of a phenolic insulating material designad to afford a smooth, easy, and comfortable grip of pleasing appearance. Each handle has a recessed arrow molded into it as a visual aid in positioning.

The handles are made in four shapes, i.e., oval, round, pistol grip, and large pistol grip.

Each of the shapes can be obtainad in the fixed type or the removable key type. The fixed handles are fastened to the switch shaft by a screw through the front of the handle.

There is also available a combination remov able key type handle in the pistol grip shape that can be used to operate both the Type W-2 and the Type W switches designed for removable key operation.

Combination

Operetion The Type W-2 switch is a rotary roller action switch. Rotation of the shaft causes the rotor rollers to roll from one set of stationary contacts to another. The number of roller contacts can vary from 1 to 6 dependi ng on the number of rotary positions required for the switch application. Each roller contact, moving radially, is held in and guided by a slot in the rotor arm. The rollers are pushed outward by spring pressure. Between roller and spring there is an insulated spring seat to reduce friction and wear. On standard potential contacts, an insulated wheel is used on both ends of the roller contact which wheels roll inside the switch stator frame.

This arrangement reduces the friction of the spring-loaded roller in riding up on the stationary contact and also results in an in creased air gap as a result of faster contact separation.

Overlapping contacts are obtained by in creasing the diameter of the contact rollers of the shorting bar. At mid-position the roller spans the space between the station ary contacts. Such rollers provide a make before-break contact in going from one position to an adjacent one.

The Type W-2 switch is available in both the maintained and the spring return types.

Both types use a housing that is ~" deep, located between the back surface of the dial plate and the frame-rotor unit. This feature permits conversion from one type to another with a minimum of parts, time and experience.

Maintained Type: On a switch of this type, the switch is held in rotary position by a starwheel mechanism. The mechanism consists of a notched, molded wheel rotating between two metal rollers mounted on spring loaded arms. This arrangement provides a positive snap action as the handle is turned.

Momentary Type: This type uses a rotor that is returned to its original position by a double coil wound spring. The spring offers minimum opposition to movement of the switch handle, but is sufficiently strong to operate the rotor for all required contacting.

For current circuits, there is available an assembly of normally closed contact be tween front -end rear terminals at each posi tion on a stage. The assembly consists of a shorting bar across the two terminals and held closed by spring pressure.
