PUBLIC ADDRESS SYSTEM

MODEL D

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

This completely transistorized public address system permits voice communication between two or more locations by any of three methods, and under extreme noise conditions.

Basically, each station consists of a combination handset/speaker amplifier, a handset with a dynamic noise cancelling microphone, and a loudspeaker. The handset/speaker amplifier is a plug-in unit mounted in either a cast aluminum watertight enclosure for exposed locations, or a formed sheet metal enclosure for protected areas. Loudspeakers are com-pletely submergence and weatherproof.

The three modes of operation are:

1. "PACE" - in which any station calling will be heard on the loudspeaker of all other stations.

making announcements or in alerting a particular station or person, who can then communicate via the "PARTY" c hanne 1.

Used in

2. "PARTY" - in which only the called and calling party converse by means of the handsets. The use of a noise cancelling microphone permits excellent voice communi-cation under severe ambient noise conditions. "PAGE" and "PARTY" are available from any station to any other station. In systems of four or more stations, two inde-pendent conversations can be carried on simultaneously -one on each channel.

3 . "SPEAKER TALKBACK" - If instructed to do so by the "Master Control" station, a remote station can set up "SPEAKER TALKBACK" by operating momentarily a push button, after which hands free talkback over the loud-speaker can be carried on between the remote and the Master under the control of the Master station.

WIRING

Typical cable and equipment terminations are shown in print R-2120.

Watertight entrance bushings (not supplied) must be used on all equipment in exposed areas, and precautions must be taken to seal the cable to prevent water seepage between armor and the inner cable cover. Cable runs should be made in an approved manner with due regard for mechanical protection.

junction boxes are required for branch circuits, they should be watertight, of a size sufficient for the number of cables entering, and supplied with a barrier type terminal strip of at least 12 terminals.

If

The use of solderless insulated spade lugs is suggested. Barrier strips in all equipment8 use a #6 terminal screw and lugs should be for this size terminal screw and for the wire size of cable supplied.

Uniform color code should be followed in all wiring and care taken - not to break up pairing when terminating.

A special cable (Belden 8775) between the 702-2 enclosure and the 901 control unit can be supplied by Lorain Electronics (already made up and lugged) when advised of the required length.

A protective insulating spray coating should be applied to remote station terminal strips after wiring is completed. Great care must be used to prevent spray from reaching socket into which amplifier is plugged.

USE OF "SPEAKER TALKBACK"

This is only to be used between the "Master" station and a remote station. A remote station is normally called on the "PAGE" channel by the "Master" station, who instructs the remote operator to answer on "SPEAKER TALKBACK". The remote operator answers by momentarily depressing the red button in the lower center of the enclosure and observing if the indicator lamp in the front cover of the associated loudspeaker lights up, system is set up for "SPEAKER TALKBACK" and the operator needs only t o talk towards the loudspeaker thereafter until the "Master" station releases by hanging up.

will depend on the ambient noise level and the distance of the talking party from the loudspeaker. With fairly low background noise, satisfactory conversation can be carried on when talking in a normal voice from 10 to 15 feet from the loudspeaker. The voice should be directed toward the speaker for best results.

This indicates that the

GENERAL

Each of the three channels "PAGE", "PARTY", and "SPEAKER TALKBACK" are common to all stations. Thus, more than two stations can converse on each channel if desired. NOTE: In "SPEAKER TALKBACK" the 'Master" station can talk to several remote stations and they can talk back to the "Master", but one remote cannot talk to another remote.

MASTER CONTROL STATION (#sol)

The 'Master" control consists of a handset and a hanger with spring retainer, an illuminated four push button selector switch and a three position toggle switch to control push button illumination, TO INITIATE A CALL

Remove handset from hanger by pushing up or forward to release from spring clips. Push down the selector button marked "PAGE" so that it locks, press the black bar switch in the center of the handset and make the announcement in a clear voice, talking into the transmitter at a distance of not more than two to three inches. Release the handset switch as soon as you finish talking and immediately push down the selector button marked "PARTY" and wait for the called station or person to answer. They will normally answer on the "PARTY" channel unless you instruct them otherwise.

CONNECTIONS BETWEEN COMPONENTS

Use single-conductor, low capacity shielded wire for connecting preamplifier to amplifier. Keep leads under ten feet in length, un le s s emitter-follower output is employed.

Speakers may b e connected with standard flexible l i ne cord (zip-cord) and up to 100 feet of cab le may be used without appreciable loss.

Make certain that all audio cab le s are kept away from speaker cables, power cables, and power trans-formers; and that speaker cab le s are kept away from power cables.

POWER

Connect the l ine cord to a wall outlet supplying

117 volt AC, 50/60 cyc le power. Power to the ampli-fier may b e controlled by means of the Power ON-OFF switch located on the front panel. To have amplifier turned on and off by preamplifier, refer to Operation Section.

An AC receptacle h a s been included on the top of t he amplifier c h a s s i s to supply power to other components in a system, not exceeding 400 watts.

T h e receptacle is connected to the Power switch, and any component connected to i t will be turned off by the Power switch.

INPUT CONNECTIONS

High Impedance: The amplifier can be driven to full output, using the high impedance input, from any puts at 500/600 ohms balanced or unbalanced, con-nec t a Bogen TL600 plug-in transformer to the XI socket located on top of t h e chass i s . Connect the 500/600 ohm input to the L O Z terminals on t h e rear of t he amplifier. T h e connection may be grounded or left floating depending on the particular installation.

Bridging Inputs: The amplifier will accept bridg-ing inputs a t 10,000 ohms, by utilizing the Bogen TLlOK transformer. T h e TLlOK is plugged into the XI re-ceptacle, and the bridging input is connected to the L O 2 input on t h e rear of the amplifier.

Obtain ing s ignal from output of other power amplif ier: For amplifiers with' a 70 volt output tap , the following circuit is recommended to deliver t he signal required to drive the HI Z input receptacle of the MBT60 booster amplifier.

OUTPUT CONNECTIONS

T h e MBT60 booster amplifier may be connected to speakers rated at 8 or 16 ohms or used with 25 volt or 70 volt constant voltage line systems.

For 8 or 16 ohm operation, connect one lead from the speakers to the COM 1 terminal and the other to the appropriate 8 or 16 ohm terminal on the rear of the amplifier chass i s . For 25 volt operation connect leads between 25 v (10.4 ohm) and COM 1; for balanced 25 volt operation disconnect shorting link between COM 1 and GND. For 70 volt unbalanced operation connect l eads t o 70 V (82 ohm) terminals and COM 2 terminal and connect shorting wire from COM 2 terminal to GND if grounding is desired. For 70 volt balanced operation connect l eads to 70 V (82 ohm) terminal and COM 2 terminal; do not connect shorting wire from COM 2 to GND.

REMOTE STANDBY AND VOLUME CONTROL

The MBT60 amplifier may be remotely controlled for standby operation by utilizing the LVP-1 accessory.

P l u g th i s accessory into the REMOTE STANDBY & VOLUME socket on the top panel of the amplifier chass i s , Mount a SPST switch, which is not supplied with the amplifier, a t a convenient remote position.

Connect one s ide of the switch to the REMOTE terminal and the other s ide to the GND terminal of the output strip of the amplifier.

For remote volume control, the Bogen RVC-1 accessory i s used in conjunction with the LVP-1.

P lug the LVP-1 accessory into the REMOTE STAND- BY & VOLUME socket. Connect the RVC-1 remote volume control between the REMOTE and GND terminals on the output strip.

The length of control cab le which can b e used between the remote switch or remote control and the amplifier i s limited by the DC resistance of the con-trol leads. The total length of control cab le used, therefore, should not exceed the following:

#22 AWG wire - 3000 feet

#18 AWG wire - 8000 feet

Two wire parallel or twisted unshielded

GROUNDING THE UNIT

Ground t h e amplifier by attaching a wire from a

GND terminal on the c h a s s i s rear to a good ground such a s the metal frame of the wall outlet or a water or steam pipe. FIGURE 1 - MBT60 REAR PANEL

OPERATION

Although the POWER switch on the front panel may be ’used to turn the booster amplifier on and off, i t is advantageous to control the unit from the pre-amplifier. For th i s reason, the AC power cord of the MBT60 should be connected to the controlled auxiliary power receptacle of the preamplifier. A pilot light on the front panel indicates that power h a s been applied to the amplifier.

The volume control on the rear c h a s s i s is used primarily t o compensate for variations in preamplifier output levels. Thus, i f t he preamplifier output i s very high, t he user will’find that i t is necessary to operate the preamplifier’s volume control near minimum to prevent “blasting” volume output from the speaker system. Conversely, if the preamplifier output is low, the preamplifier’s volume control may have to be operated near maximum to achieve sufficient volume.

T h e volume control on the MBT60 thus permits the user to preset t h e gain of the amplifier so that the preamplifier’s volume control is operated in i t s mid-range t o achieve the desired volume level range.

Th i s control, which need be s e t only once on instal-lation, is a screwdriver adjustment.

The SPEECH-MUSIC switch is located on the top of the amplifier. Set th i s switch to SPEECH position to provide optimum speech response.

TRANSISTOR REPLACEMENT

Trans is tors and semiconductor diodes do not

I ordinarily require routine testing. When the receiver does not perform properly and i t is suspected that a transistor or diode is a t fault, only a qualified technician should t e s t them.

However, if previous tests by a technician in-d ica te that a transistor might b e faulty, i t must b e removed from the circuit for checking. The plug-in transistors, of course, can be eas i ly replaced. To replace plug-in transistors u s e Dow Coming No. 340 Compond Silicon Grease (or equivalent). Brush com-pound on hea t sink and transistor; b e certain that no foreign matter is on hea t Sink or transistor. To insure proper contact, securely screw down plug-in transistors.

NOTE

When the MBT60 i s used in conjunction with a Bogen MXM-A Mixer Preamplifier t he following pre-cautions should b e observed.

Because of t h e high output and sensit ivity of the MXM-A which makes possible the paralleling of up to three (MXM-A) uni t s (with a total of 15 available microphone inputs), it is important that the overall system gain is properly adjusted (reduced) when only one MXM-A is used with MBT60 booster amplifier(s).

The MBT60 Volume control should b e adjusted to provide a high impedance booster input sensit ivity of 20 volts for full output; or a sensit ivity of approxi-mately 4 volts when the input t o the booster amplifier is 600 ohms (i.e. with TL600 line transformer). This is accomplished by rob t ing the MBT60 VOLUME control approximately f /4 turn clockwise from the off position.

With the MXM-A MASTER gain control s e t at “6”, all channels will have more than sufficient sensitivity.

When the MXM-A and MBT60 are both adjusted as described above unnecessary and excess ive overall system gain, hum noise or possible oscillation will be avoided.
