1 Part 3

Chapter 6 B10

Superstruc ture

B10 Super Structure third paragraph indicates that the Mechanical and Office Room facilities must be structurally independent. Can the design builder propose an alternate configuration with a shared structural system for the entire facility.

Compliance with 2018 UFC 4-010-01 Standard 7 "Structural Isolation" is required to avoid triggering whole-building anti-terrorism compliance.

There is an allowance for alternative analysis methods to prove that collapse of the low-occupancy portion of the building will not impact the inhabited portion; however it would be difficult to prove this with calculations. The simplest solution is to isolate the inhabited area of the building from the low occupancy area of the building.

Typically it is OK to share footings as long as moment, etc are considered when 2 or more columns or load-bearing walls share a footing (depending on structural system chosen).
