...Antifreeze?
1. On Concrete?
Can spill be cleaned with 3 or fewer Duskin or disposable rags (old cloths)?
a. YES
1) Clean with Duskin or disposable rags until surface is dry.
2) Wring excess fluid out into drip pan, and emptydrip pan into “Used Antifreeze”container.
3) If Duskin rags were used, place the rags into a designated laundrybin.
4) If disposable rags were used, place in designated waste stream container within the Hazardous Waste Accumulation Point(HWAP).
b. NO
1) All Purpose AbsorbentPads/Socks:
a) Place all purpose absorbent pads on the spill to soak up standing liquid.
b) Stop the flow of fluid by damming and diking using socks.
c) Wring excess fluid out into drip pan, and empty drip pan into “Used Antifreeze”container.
d) Double bag absorbent pads/socks, and place in designated waste stream container within the
HWAP.

2) Dry Sweep:
a) Stop the flow of fluid by placing drysweeparound the perimeter of the spill and brush inward utilizing a street broom (hard bristle broom).
b) Grind dry sweep into the spill using a broom or oil resistant boot (e.g., military boots, safety shoes, etc.).
c) Add more dry sweep asnecessary.
d) Sweep up used dry sweep with abroom and dustpan or shovel.
e) Save used dry sweep for reuse in used absorbent drum inside your shop. When it is completely soaked through, double bag and place in designated waste stream container within the HWAP.
Note: Absorbent pads and dry sweep CANNOT be placed in the same bag.
2. On Asphalt?
The spill material will soak into the asphalt, and it is best to use dry sweep. Follow the procedure in the aforementioned para 1.b.2) for dry sweep. Once the flow of material is stopped you can use all purpose absorbent pads to soak up the standing liquid.
3. On a Dirt Surface?
DO NOT DIG! Stop the flow of fluid by damming and diking using socks or pads, and place absorbent pads on the spill to soak up standing liquid. Call your Environmental Office for assistance.

…Battery Acid? Sulfuric Acid?
(These can burn you!!!)
1. Open windows and doors for good ventilation. This chemical may pose a respiratory problem under low ventilation. Appropriate respirator is required.
2. Use sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) toneutralize– this will bubble and get hot.
3. Apply sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) around spill perimeter then inward.
4. Utilize plastic tools (metal tools react with acids), and slowly mix cleanup material/spilled material until the mixture stops bubbling.
5. The spill is neutralized when the pH is 7, which is typically when mixture forms asludge.
6. Use pH paper, and check the pH of the sludge to ensure that it is neutralized (= pH7).
7. Scoop neutralized mixture into double plastic disposal bag with plastic utensil after allowing the mixture to cool.
8. Label bag “Contaminated: Sulfuric Acid from Lead Battery Neutralized with Sodium Bicarbonate”.
9. Call JEMMS for waste pickup.
