About this file

This document contains questions and answers related to a federal solicitation for the Helicopter Drive System Test Alignment and Readiness Transition (HeDSTART) project. The scope of the project is to design, fabricate, procure, and install upgraded components in the Helicopter Drive System Test Facility to safely and efficiently operate integrated helicopter drive systems. The document provides inertial property details of existing equipment and confirms the structural load capabilities of the supporting frame. It also specifies water supply parameters including flow rate, pressure, and inlet temperature that can be provided for dynamometer selection. The work will be performed 90% at the contractor's site and 10% at the Government's Propulsion Systems Evaluation Facility located at Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland.

HeDSTART Questions and Answers #2

1. Are all inertial properties of the existing equipment known (gear box and thrust system) to appropriately account for the total system inertia? If so can they be provided during the design phase?

a. Yes, all inertial properties of the existing equipment is known and they can be provided during the design phase.

2. 5.1.2.3 States “Maintain current system structural capabilities for weight supporting and torque reaction 18,000 SHP at 180 rpm” Should that be 9000 SHP or is the 18,000 SHP correct and the frame needs to react 2X the max specified SHP.

a. 18,000 SHP is correct – the supporting structure is designed and built to be able to operate all DoD drive systems. Larger aircraft systems would require a speed increasing GBX change/upgrade for torque loading and inertia, but the structure needs to be capable of both.

3. Can all water supply specifications, flow rate, pressure, inlet temperature, etc. be provided for selection of dynamometer?

a. Two (2) pumps – each rated for 1075 GPM and 220ft of head. A large pressure regulation valve in the bypass line can set dyno inlet pressure between 40-100 PSI. Assume a 75 deg inlet temp can be provided.
