1.1.4 Receiver/Exciters
1. EASR Receiver Group – The receiver typically amplifies and attenuates the returned RF signal collected by the antenna and processed by the T/R modules and mixes (i.e. downconverts) it with other RF signals to yield an intermediate frequency (IF) signal. The IF signal is then processed (amplified, attenuated and filtered) and then downconverted to video where the signal is detected and then digitized. This RF processing is done in a channel, which is a physical path comprised of electronic circuits that change the magnitude and waveform of the input signal.
The principle cost drivers are the number of RF channels, the frequency of operation and the number of downconversions.
2. EASR Exciter Group – The exciter generates the RF frequencies needed by the radar. It consists of oscillators, frequency multipliers, phase lock loops and filters integrated with waveguide and micro strip into RF modules. Exciters produce the coherent waveforms needed for timing, downconversion and for RF transmission. The synthesizer generates the RF frequencies needed by the RF assemblies to operate. The principle cost drivers are the number of exciters and the frequency of operation.
1.1.5 Digital Beamformer
EASR Beamforming is the combination of radio signals from a set of small non-directional antennas to simulate a large directional antenna. In radar applications, beamforming can be used to steer an antenna to determine the direction of the signal source.
1.1.6 Beam Steering Controller
EASR Beam Steering is the function of controlling the direction of the radar’s output beam. A processor or computer typically performs this function. The beam steering processor consists of electronic CCAs with CPUs, memory (RAM, ROM, EEPROM, etc.) chips, input/output functions and bus interface hardware. These processors usually consist of many digital ICs along with resistors, capacitors and some other discrete components. The principle cost drivers are the number of elements controlled and the number of phase shifter bits.
1.1.7 Data/Signal Processing
Equipment
1. Signal Processor – The signal processor processes the radar echo signal. This function in today’s radars starts after A/D conversion of the electrical signals and includes real time image processing. Finite impulse response filtering, FFT processing, Doppler clutter rejection, moving target indication and thresholding and detection are functions usually performed in the signal processor. The signal processing function in radars is implemented with many digital ICs along with resistors, capacitors and other discrete components.
2. Data Processor – Data processors typically perform the data analysis and control function of the system or box. In radar systems data processors typically perform position refinement, track association, tracking, trajectory generation and sensor control functions. Data processors for radar systems implement microprocessors with their support circuitry to perform the processing and system control function. Data processors consist of CPUs, memory, input/output functions and bus interface hardware. Data processors usually consist of many digital ICs along with resistors, capacitors and some other discrete components. The principle cost driver for data processors is the throughput and memory capacity of the processor.
3. Controls & Displays– Controls and displays provide the human-to-radar system interface.
Controls and displays typically perform or assist in the data analysis and control function of the system. In radar systems, the control function is typically performed by a data processing workstation.
