4. First aid measures
4.1. Description of first aid measures
General In all cases of doubt, or when symptoms persist, seek medical attention.
Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.
Inhalation Remove to fresh air, keep patient warm and at rest. If breathing is irregular or stopped, give artificial respiration. If unconscious place in the recovery position and obtain immediate medical attention. Give nothing by mouth. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. High vapor concentrations can cause headaches, stupor, irritation of throat and eyes. Aspirations into lungs can cause pneumonia or death.
Eyes Irrigate copiously with clean water for at least 15 minutes, holding the eyelids apart and seek medical attention.
Skin Remove contaminated clothing. Wash skin thoroughly with soap and water or use a recognized skin cleanser.
Ingestion If accidentally swallowed obtain immediate medical attention. Keep at rest. Do NOT induce vomiting. Have patient lie down & keep warm. Vomiting may lead to pneumonitis, which may be fatal.
4.2. Most important symptoms and effects, both acute and delayed
Overview Exposure to solvent vapor concentrations from the component solvents in excess of the stated occupational exposure limits may result in adverse health effects such as mucous membrane and respiratory system irritation and adverse effects on the kidneys, liver and central nervous system. Symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, muscular weakness, drowsiness and in extreme cases, loss of consciousness.
Repeated or prolonged contact with the preparation may cause removal of natural fat from the skin resulting in dryness, irritation and possible non-allergic contact dermatitis. Solvents may also be absorbed through the skin. Splashes of liquid in the eyes may cause irritation and soreness with possible reversible damage. See section 2 for further details.
Inhalation May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways.
5. Fire-fighting measures
5.1. Extinguishing media
Recommended extinguishing media; alcohol resistant foam, CO2, powder, water spray.
Do not use; water jet.
5.2. Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture
Hazardous decomposition: High temperatures and fires may produce such toxic substances as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.
5.3. Advice for fire-fighters
SPECIAL FIRE FIGHTING PROCEDURES: Water spray may be ineffective on fire but can protect fire-fighters & cool closed containers. Use fog nozzles if water is used. Do not enter confined fire-space without full bunker gear. (Helmet with face shield, bunker coats, gloves and rubber boots). Use NIOSH approved positive-pressure self-contained breathing apparatus.
UNUSUAL EXPLOSION AND FIRE PROCEDURES SLIGHTLY COMBUSTIBLE! Keep container tightly closed.
Isolate from oxidizers, heat, & open flame. Closed containers may explode if exposed to extreme heat. Applying to hot surfaces requires special precautions. Continue all label precautions!
Cool closed containers exposed to fire by spraying them with water. Do not allow run off water and contaminants from fire fighting to enter drains or water ways.
ERG Guide No. ----
6. Accidental release measures
6.1. Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures
Put on appropriate personal protective equipment (see section 8).
6.2. Environmental precautions
Do not allow spills to enter drains or waterways.
Use good personal hygiene practices. Wash hands before eating, drinking, smoking or using toilet. Promptly remove soiled clothing and wash thoroughly before reuse.
6.3. Methods and material for containment and cleaning up
GENERAL PROCEDURES:
SPILL or LEAK PROCEDURES: Secure area and remove all sources of ignition and heat. Prevent additional discharge of material. Absorb small spills with sand, filter-aid, vermiculite or other inert absorbent material. For large spills, prevent material from entering sewers and or water courses. Contain spill with sand, or earth dikes. Recover as much as possible by pumping. Treat remainder as small spill. Dispose of waste in accordance with applicable government regulations. Wear chemical goggles, gloves, boots, and protective clothing. Wear respirator if necessary.
ENVIRONMENTAL PRECAUTIONS:
WATER SPILL: Keep material out of storm sewers and ditches which lead to waterways.
LAND SPILL: Contact applicable authorities and determine applicable regulations based on SDS information.
AIR RELEASE: Contact applicable authorities and determine applicable regulations based on SDS information.
7. Handling and storage
7.1. Precautions for safe handling
HANDLING: Isolate from oxidizers, heat, & open flame. Use only with adequate ventilation. Avoid breathing of vapor or spray mist. Avoid prolonged or repeated contact with skin. Wear OSHA Standard goggles or face shield. Consult Safety Equipment Supplier. Wear gloves, apron & footwear impervious to this material. Wash clothing before reuse.
Avoid free fall of liquid. Ground containers when transferring. Do not flame cut, braze, or weld. Continue all label precautions!
See section 2 for further details. - [Prevention]:
7.2. Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities
Handle containers carefully to prevent damage and spillage.
Incompatible materials: Strong oxidizing agents and acids.
STORAGE TEMPERATURE: 40 - 90°F
SHELF LIFE: Recommended use within 24 months.
STORAGE: Store large amounts in structures made for OSHA Class IIIB liquids Keep container tightly closed & upright when not in use to prevent leakage.
MATERIALS: Carbon Steel is suitable COMMENTS: KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN! Empty containers retain product residue and can be dangerous. Do not pressurize, cut weld, braze, solder, drill, grind, or expose such containers to heat, flame, sparks static electricity, or other sources of ignition.
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS: None
See section 2 for further details. - [Storage]:
