About this file
This document is a Q&A response from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) addressing technical questions regarding RFP MG-11132024 for a Storage Ring Scraper. The responses are organized into two main statements covering design specifications and mechanical components.
The first section addresses questions about monolithic design alternatives, welding methods, and component positioning. LBNL confirms that while 3D step files are available for the alternative monolithic Scraper vacuum chamber, vendors must develop their own 2D drawings. They approve eliminating E-beam welding in favor of flange solutions or alternative joining methods that don't affect CrCuZr hardness. The second section focuses on technical specifications for the motorized linear actuator, confirming it is an Acme Screw actuator with positional accuracy within 125 μm. LBNL provides detailed information about materials approved for ultra-high vacuum (UHV) applications, including Vespel SP-3 bearings, AMPCO18 components, and a Belden U-Joint (P/N DUJ-HS500-316-1001). The document concludes by addressing questions about CREO files and vessel design modifications.

LBNL Response to Questions 02 Re: LBNL RFP MG-11132024 – 12/05/2024
Main Statement 1 On the ALS document reference “AL-1758-9513_SR Scraper ES” it is mentioned on page 14 that an alternative design (monolithic) is available in the RFP but these plans have not been sent yet.
1. Could you please send us the 2D drawings and the associated STEP files of the monolithic versions?
LBNL Response: See the attached 3D step file of the alternative monolithic Scraper vacuum chamber. No 2D drawing was created for this alternative design.
If a vendor wants to pursue this design, they need to develop their own drawing.
2. As the design stands, E-beam welds cannot be made because the areas to be welded are inaccessible to the electron beam.
For the pump ports (for instance on part AL-1552-1506), would it be acceptable to machine a DN25CF on part AL-1552-1506 instead of having an E-beam weld?
The part AL-1584-2431 will be modified including a DN25CF at its extremity.
LBNL Response: It is desirable to eliminate E-beam welding. LBNL will therefore consider the proposal to eliminate the stainless-to-copper weld and replace it with a flange solution that changes the location and size of the CF 40 Port
• Or would it be possible to consider another technology for joining the parts (vacuum brazing or laser welding) instead of electron-beam welding?
LBNL Response: Yes, as long as it does not affect the hardness of the CrCuZr.
3. Is it possible to move the fiducial holder assemblies (e.g., AL-1580-1800) and the ‘pump port assemblies (AL-1584-2431), particularly for the double scraper assembly (AL-1580- 6344)?
The Fiducial holder can be moved as long as they remain visible from the face they currently are on.
The pumping port can also be moved and redesigned to eliminate welding.
Main Statement 2 Questions
1. The motorized linear actuator looks like a commercial assembly integrating a motorized, non-rotating piston equipped with position sensors and a rotative encoder on the stepper motor second shaft:
If you confirm, may LBNL specify the brand, product, and model name/ID code? Is the actuator compatible with both the required strokes?
LBNL Response: It is an Acme Screw actuator. Please see attach the datasheet.
2. Which is the necessary linear resolution, and is it compatible with the selected actuator?
LBNL Response: Positional accuracy of the Actuator throughout the entire stroke is within 125 µm. (Uni-directionally loaded)
3. Without the use of preloaded bearing and using solid pins as hinges or driving elements sliding in slotted apertures, a certain amount of backlash is unavoidable as measured at the scraper blade: Which is the maximum level of position incertitude you expect to get?
LBNL Response: Linear backlash is not considered because this gearbox is uni-directionally loaded (in vacuum). Axial backlash is controlled by the Scraper Blade’s confinement between the Slotted Bearings.
4. The in-vacuum mechanisms are based on a kinematic involving grazing friction: is UHV lubrication allowed?
LBNL Response: The Linear Bearing is Vespel SP-3 approved for UHV. It is basically SP-1 embedded with some molybdenum disulfide. This style of mechanism is being used on the Storage Ring Scrapers.
5. The in-vacuum mechanism includes some unusual components for an in-vacuum application as the guide bushes and the cardan joints. These are commercial components: if you have already validated their use in UHV or they are UHV compliant according to the technical data sheet, may LBNL specify the brand and product name/ID code for both of them?
LBNL Response: Bearings, Center Axle & Push/Pull Rod are AMPCO18. The blade is CuCrZr. The thrust Washer is BeCu. AMPCO18 is the interface of all sliding surfaces. All materials are approved for UHV. The U-Joint is made by “Belden” P/N DUJ-HS500-316-1001 from 316SS & AMPCO18. All materials are approved for UHV.
6. Are the native CREO files available (with additional info with respect to the step files)?
LBNL Response: Please see attached.
7. Can the long tube protruding from one of the horizontal scraper vessels be flanged to be connected to the main body of the vessel? It may be either a CF25 (US std.) or even a custom-made flange between CF16 (too small) and CF25 (a bit too large), if necessary, spigot-style to eliminate the resulting gap:
LBNL Response: There is no room to insert the bolt hole. An alternative design was developed for the vessel. the part could be fabricated from one monolithic block. See question #2 in the main statement #1
