About this file

This document is a Response to Questions document from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) regarding RFP MG-11032025, dated 11/18/2025. The document contains nine technical clarification responses addressing potential offerors' inquiries about equipment specifications and design requirements. Key details include: (1) LBNL will provide data sheets for commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components, with possible exceptions for simple parts, (2) SOLIDWORKS or STEP files can be sent to awarded subcontractors for design purposes, (3) alternative material specifications are acceptable for copper (C10200) and tungsten (DENSIMET alloy with minimum 17 g/cm³ density), and (4) specific technical requirements were clarified such as encoder configurations, limit switch needs, and leveling foot specifications. The responses indicate flexibility for offerors in design approaches while maintaining core technical performance requirements, with LBNL willing to provide additional documentation to support potential subcontractors' design efforts.

LBNL Response to Questions 01 Re: LBNL RFP MG-11032025 – 11/18/2025

1. Could LBNL please send Offerors the LBNL documents related to the references HW-1000-XXXX?

LBNL Response: All data sheets associated with HW# commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components have been provided. Possible exceptions include fasteners or other simple COTS parts, for which the information provided directly in the BOM should be adequate. If any specific HW# requires additional documentation, please list them, and LBNL will supply more information. Note that equivalent COTS parts from other vendors are acceptable.

2. If an Offeror is using SOLIDWORKS instead of CREO and is awarded the Subcontract, would it be possible for LBNL to send SOLIDWORKS files or STEP files of the equipment in order to design the requested devices (Homing, motion locking device, Integrated Bakeout system, etc.)?

LBNL Response: Yes.

3. Could LBNL please send Offerors a STEP file of the assembly AL-

1445-7483 in order to check if the implantation of encoders is feasible?

LBNL Response: File attached.

4. For the copper, can the Offeror propose C10200 instead of C10100?

LBNL Response: Yes.

5. Can the Offeror propose DENSIMET alloy

(https://www.plansee.com/en/materials/w-mmc.html) instead of pure tungsten?

LBNL Response: The proposed alloy is acceptable as an alternative to pure tungsten, provided that the selected grade has a minimum density of 17 g/cm³.

6. Could LBNL please confirm that there is no Homing system required for the Roll DoF?

LBNL Response: Correct.

7. Does LBNL confirm that two encoders are requested for each pitch

DoF? If so, would LBNL mind explaining the reason?

LBNL Response: The reference to two encoders for the pitch axis is a suggestion, not a requirement. A single absolute encoder is acceptable as long as the selected encoder meets the requirements in the SOW, sections 5 and 5.1.1.3, and the TS, section 7.1.7.

8. On the flexure, does the Offeror have to supply limit switches for the

Roll DoF?

LBNL Response: Limit switches are NOT required for the Roll axis.

9. Does the Offeror have to supply the levelling foot (AL-1455-5370_01 +

AL-1454-2709_01+ AL-1455-5352_01)? If yes, could LBNL please send the associated drawings?

LBNL Response: The levelling feet are COTS items. Offerors can provide an equivalent item that satisfies the following minimum requirements: linear X, Y, Z adjustment range of ±5 mm with resolution of 50 µm.
