About this file

This is a Questions and Answers document from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) responding to inquiries related to RFP MG-02122026, dated March 2, 2026.

The document addresses two key questions regarding LBNL's particle accelerator and associated components. Question 1 confirms that Berkeley's accelerator meets the federal specifications outlined in category 3A201 for flash X-ray generators or pulsed electron accelerators, specifically satisfying criterion c.2: an accelerator peak electron energy of 25 MeV or greater with peak power greater than 50 MW. Question 2 confirms that the Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) used as power converters for the particle accelerator were designed by LBNL internally and are compliant for this application. The responses indicate that LBNL's equipment and components meet the technical requirements specified in the solicitation.

LBNL Response to Questions 06 Re: LBNL RFP MG-02122026 – 03/02/2026

1. Does Berkeley’s accelerator fit the description below?

3A201

c. Flash X-ray generators or pulsed electron accelerators having either of the following sets of characteristics:

c.1. An accelerator peak electron energy of 500 keV or greater, but less than 25 MeV, and with a "figure of merit" (K) of 0.25 or greater; or c.2. An accelerator peak electron energy of 25 MeV or greater, and a "peak power" greater than 50 MW;

LBNL Response: c.2. An accelerator peak electron energy of 25 MeV or greater, and a "peak power" greater than 50 MW;

2. Can LBNL confirm that the PCBs were designed by them specifically for this purpose (power converter for the particle accelerator)?

LBNL Response: The Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) were designed by LBNL and are compliant for this application.
