STORAGE
Short Term Storage (3 Months or Less)
1. Store all motors, gear reducers, bearings, control panels, and electronic sensors (such as pH ORP and DO probes), solenoid valves, gear reducer torque overload devices, as well as materials such as chemical anchors in a dry heated area that is kept above 40°F.
2. Keep all equipment off of the floor to prevent moisture buildup.
CAUTION! MOISTURE ISSUE. DO NOT SEAL ANY EQUIPMENT AS THIS TRAPS
MOISTURE.
3. Cover all equipment with tarps or heavy plastic.
4. Periodically inspect all unpainted exposed surfaces for corrosion due to humidity or atmospheric contaminants. Recoat all exposed unpainted surfaces with a corrosion inhibitor such as Cosmoline.
5. Rotate all shafts and bearings several revolutions at least twice monthly.
6. Motors furnished with space heaters shall have the space heaters connected and powered during the storage period (see ELECTRIC MOTORS below).
Long Term Storage (Equipment not Installed)
In addition to the Short Term Storage guidelines listed above, the contractor shall observe the following:
1. Bearings, whether they are Dodge Pillow Block, Lakeside Upper and Lower bearings for Screw Pumps, or any other type of bearing, shall be rotated a minimum of 3 ½ revolutions each month. Any bearings not supplied with grease shall be filled at the beginning of any long term storage period.
2. Primer paints are not intended to be left unprotected indefinitely waiting for the finish coat to be applied. It is the responsibility of the contractor to touch up or re-prime any areas that show degradation during long term storage.
Installed Equipment Standing Idle
1. Equipment shall be operated for at least four (4) hours on a bi-weekly basis to keep all enclosed gear surfaces wetted with lubricant to prevent water etching or false brinelling of the bearings and seizure of the seal lips on the shafts.
2. If unit is being operated under power, then the contractor shall periodically check the level and condition of the oil in each gear reducer. Add or replace if necessary.
3. Motors furnished with space heaters shall have the space heaters connected and powered during all idle periods.
CAUTION! DO NOT OPERATE OIL FILLED REDUCERS WITH PLUGS UNDER
POWER BECAUSE THE PRESSURE GENERATED WILL CAUSE SEAL
FAILURE.
4. If power is not available, then reducers shall be filled completely with recommended oil, or a recommended additive shall be installed (Shell ENSIS, for Flender reducers or VCI-105 for Dodge reducers) and the vents shall be replaced with plugs. The input shafts shall then be rotated by hand a minimum of 30 revolutions every two weeks.
5. All bearings (except motor bearings) and their seal plates and end caps, when furnished, shall be kept full of grease to keep out moisture. Apply grease once a month until fresh grease shows at the seals. Motor bearings are to be lubricated per the manufacturer’s instructions.
6. Enclosed Screw Pump lower bearing rollers shall be sprayed with oil before operation. Then, during startup, 6 oz. of oil must be sprayed on roller surfaces during the first five minutes of operation.
ELECTRIC MOTORS
General
WARNING! MEGOHM METERS PRODUCE HAZARDOUS VOLTAGES. OBSERVE
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS PER THE METER MANUFACTURER’S
INSTRUCTIONS.
CAUTION! A MEGOHM-METER WILL DAMAGE PANEL COMPONENTS SUCH AS
VARIABLE FREQUENCY DRIVES (VFDS). IF THE MOTOR IS WIRED
INTO THE EQUIPMENT, THE MOTOR WINDINGS SHALL BE FIRST
DISCONNECTED FROM THE EXTERNAL CIRCUIT IN THE MOTOR
JUNCTION BOX BEFORE PERFORMING THE MEGGER TEST. FAILURE
TO DO SO WILL VOID THE WARRANTY ON THE CONTROL PANEL.
1. Upon receipt, each motor shall be Megger tested per the attached procedure. The results of the Megger test shall then be faxed to Lakeside Equipment Corp. at 630/837-5647 to the attention of the service manager or emailed to service@lakeside-equipment.com.
2. If the motor is not mounted to the equipment and is not be ready for service for more than 3 months, then the motor shall be stored in a clean, dry and heated area (above 40°F).
a. Use desiccants or other humidity control methods.
b. Connect and power any motor space heaters with the proper voltage to prevent condensation.
c. Coat all external machined surfaces with a corrosion inhibitor such as cosmoline.
3. If the motor is equipment-mounted and the equipment cannot be stored indoors, take reasonable measures to protect the motor(s) from moisture and temperature extremes from the elements. This would include covering the equipment with tarps and following the requirements of step #2 above.
4. Make sure the motor is greased according to the supplied manufacturer‘s recommendations.
5. Once per month, rotate the shaft several turns to distribute grease in bearings.
6. When the motor is ready for service it shall be megger tested again. This information shall be faxed to Lakeside Equipment Corp. as noted in step 1 (please note the cautions from step #1 above). Record this information on the form below and a copy turned over to the Service Engineer at equipment startup.
Motor Insulation Resistance Testing
It is natural for the insulation used on electric motor windings to slowly lose insulating properties over time. Under normal storage and operating conditions, insulation will be suitable for many years of service. If exposed to harsh environmental conditions such as temperature extremes, moisture, chemical contamination or any combination of these conditions; this process may be greatly accelerated. Motors stored for long-term periods, usually in excess of three months, may unknowingly be exposed to these extreme conditions. If long–term storage is required; it is prudent to test the insulation before and after the storage period. A copy of the test data must be furnished to Lakeside if there is a warranty claim for motors that have been in long-term storage.
This test describes the procedure to measure the Dielectric Absorption Ratio (DAR) for the motor insulation. The test is based on the fact that good insulation will show an increase in resistance after the test voltage is applied. After the connections are made and the voltage is applied, resistance readings are made at two different times, 30 and 60-second periods. The DAR is calculated by the formula, DAR = R60/R30. The calculated DAR value is then compared against a recommended range of values to determine if the insulation is suitable for service. The equipment and procedure to accomplish this test is outlined below.
Equipment Required
WARNING! MEGOHM METERS PRODUCE HAZARDOUS VOLTAGES. OBSERVE
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS PER THE METER MANUFACTURER’S
INSTRUCTIONS.
A megohm meter with a minimum output voltage of 500 Volts DC is required. A 500 VDC test voltage is sufficient for testing motors name plated for 600 Volts and less.
Electrical Hookup
1. If applicable, disconnect the incoming power and remove the power supply lines from the motor “T” leads.
2. Separate the motor “T” leads so that each winding can be tested separately.
3. Place a wire nut on the end of each “T” lead to prevent incidental contact or grounding while performing the test. Remove the nut as each winding is tested.
4. Connect the test lead from the Megohm meter marked “Line” or “L” to one of the motor “T” leads.
5. Connect the test lead from the Megohm meter marked “Earth” or “E” to the frame of the motor.
Procedure
1. Apply 500 volts between the motor “T” lead and frame of the motor.
2. Read and record the resistance (megohms) 30 seconds after the test voltage is applied. (See attached log for recording values)
3. Read and record the resistance 60 seconds after the voltage application.
4. Repeat the above procedure for each of the motor “T” leads.
5. Calculate the DAR. (R60/R30)
6. Compare the DAR for each lead against the serviceability table which follows the log.

Historical Value
Regular testing over time establishes a history, which may be used to detect a change in the insulation properties. If the rate of deterioration is rapid or has a reached a questionable state, preventive measures may be taken to replace the motor or provide supplemental environmental protection. This test procedure may be used for optional preventive maintenance purposes to monitor the condition of the insulation over the life of the motor. Additional copies of the log may be made and the data saved for record purposes.
