SUBJECT: KY ERFO COE 2019-1(1) Hydraulic Analysis Memo

TO MESSAGE/COMMENT FROM/DATE

Jatinder Bains Project Manager

Shoukat Nawaz Highway Design Manager

We have completed the hydrologic and hydraulic analysis for the streambank at Lake Cumberland Kendall Recreation Area, in Russell County, Kentucky.

The purpose of the project is to repair damages for the day use Parking, a boat launch ramp, and the campground entrance loop. Work includes the constructing a reinforced soil slope and a gabion wall along.

The site is located approximately 1,550 feet downstream of Wolf Creek Dam that discharges the water to the lower Cumberland River.

Hydrology and Hydraulic Analysis Two USGS stream gage are near the sites; The USGS stream gage:

Cumberland River Near Rowena, KY with the station number 03414000 and the USGS stream gage station: Lake Cumberland Near Jamestown, KY with the station number 03413500.

The design peak flows were obtained from the USGS stream gage station on Cumberland River, the gage is located no more than 5000 feet downstream of the sites, and it has continued records of the stream. For the design peak flows for various return events refer to Table 1.

The site has a contributing drainage area of 5790.0 square miles and the stream flows is entirely regulated by the flow release from Wolf Creek Dam.

Based on information obtained, the highest recorded water surface elevation at the site is 578.77 feet.

The Federal Highway Administration software; Sedimentation and River Hydraulics – Two-Dimensional (SRH-2D) version 13.0.9 software was used to simulate the existing hydraulic conditions for the structure, water surface elevations, channel top widths, average velocities, and hydraulic water surface elevations at the location showing with streambank erosion.

The hydraulic model was developed using survey mapping, and FEMA floodplain delineations.

The FHWA PDDM (Project Development and Design Manual), Chapter 7.4.5 indicates the stability design for any retaining wall should be evaluated for the longitudinal flow that can cause scour along the wall, and scour from any cross drain near the structure. Since the wall will be more than 6.5 feet, the design was based for the 100-year flood event. Hydraulic toolbox version 4.4 software was used to determine the riprap rock size for needed the stream revetment.

Summary of Findings and Recommendations

We performed multiple stream simulations with different stream flows, with the intent to determine the stream behavior at different flow stages. For this project, we used the 100-year storm event to determine the stream flow velocities and the water surface elevations at the structure for design purposes. Please refer to Table 2 for the water depth at the structure for the different storm event.

Table 2: Water Surface Elevations

Flood Event (yr) Water Depth (ft) 50 574.90 100 577.20 200 578.02

Once we got the water elevations at multiple locations throughout the stream, we compared these elevations with the highest recorded water surface elevation and confirmed the elevations with the FEMA elevations for the area. These elevations were used as a reference point to calibrate the model and taking into consideration that the stream is completely controlled by the upstream structure.

Recommendations Based on the hydraulic analysis we recommend class 7. The riprap should be placed at a slope of 1.5H:1V or flatter.

Please contact us if you should have any questions or concerns.
