About this file

This document is an I-9 ID Proofing Criteria reference guide that outlines acceptable forms of identification for employment verification purposes. The document presents two categories of identification: Column A contains picture IDs issued by federal or state governments, including state-issued driver's licenses, state DMV-issued ID cards, U.S. passports, military ID cards, U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner cards, foreign passports with appropriate stamps, and permanent resident cards with photographs. Column B contains non-picture IDs or acceptable picture IDs not issued by federal or state governments, including Social Security cards, certified birth certificates, state voter registration cards, Native American tribal documents, certificates of U.S. citizenship and naturalization, school IDs with photographs, Canadian driver's licenses, U.S. Citizen ID cards, and employment authorization documents issued by the Department of Homeland Security.

The document establishes two mandatory requirements for ID proofing. First, two forms of identification are required from the acceptable documents list, with at least one being a state or federal government-issued picture ID. Acceptable combinations include either two forms from Column A or one form from Column A combined with another from Column B. Second, any identification used for ID proofing purposes must be valid and not expired. These criteria align with Form I-9 requirements for verifying employee identity and work authorization.
