PRO Office and Drive Around Yard PRO is the property reutilization office where items are stored pending sale.
Temporary Storage Facilities Buildings are utilized as temporary storage facilities for incoming/outgoing material for processed used in WADF.
· Breakdown Facility This building is used for disassembly of munition items and is currently being retrofitted to complete the D561/D562 155mm projectile sub-munition download. This building will be used in the future to remotely download payloads from projectiles by pushing the sub-munitions out of the projectile cavity into cardboard tubes for palletization so they can be transported to the detonation range.
· High Pressure Washout Building contains high pressure washout/steam out capabilities. This building is utilized to conduct steam out processes for large items such as cast loaded underwater mines and depth charges. Items are lifted by crane to the upper deck and placed on tilt table washout/steam out tables where the explosives are washed out / steamed out utilizing a hand held lance. The molten slurred explosive mixture gravity feeds through a water separation tank to a melt kettle where it is dehydrated by vacuum, then it moves on to a belt flaker where it is cooled, solidified and broken into small pieces and packaged for sale or reuse. When the explosive removal is complete the case is transferred to a steam heated autoclave where any residual explosives and the hot melt liner material is melted out. The explosive residue/liner material is then directed to the kernelling machine solidified and packaged for disposal.
· Chem Lab (breakroom) This facility is a certified analytical lab, which also contains a lunch room used for employee breaks and shower facilities. This is also the area where all visitors entering WADF must come sign in.
· Range Scrap Processing Facility Range Scrap Processing Facility and is utilized for shredding and / or shearing of inert items. Items are then moved to the property reutilization office and put up for bid for public sale.
· Meltout Facility This building is utilized to melt out and recover explosives from unserviceable or obsolete munitions to be reutilized later as donor material for old Bomb/ New bomb operations.
· Temporary storage facilities (WADF) Buildings are utilized for temporary storage of ammunition components while in processes at WADF.
· Loading Pad (breakroom) Pad is utilized to process receipts and shipments for items stored in the North Magazine Area and to process retrograde shipments.
· Rail Classification Yard Rail Classification Yard Used to conduct receipt and shipping operations by rail. Capacity: 195 FOOT RAILCARS NEW limits: No limit up to 48 hours. After 48 hours the rail cars have to be moved.
Number of lines: 6 railroad tracks inside the classification yard Rail crossing at Thorne road has no signal or active barrier.
Rail road sidings at Thorne road can store up to 65ea, 89 foot empty railcars.
There are 212 miles of track on the installation only 39 miles are maintained. Maintained rail is mainly from the classification yard to loading pads. Outside the installation the Army owns 54 miles of track from the installation towards Wabuska, NV.
· Pad (Central Mag) This Pad is used for blocking and bracing shop operations, (break room / lunchroom) Utilized to process shipments and receipts and retrograde operations for items stored in Central Magazine Area.
Pad (South Mag) Pad is utilized to process shipments/receipts and retrograde operations.
· New Bomb New Bomb located approximately 26 miles south of Hawthorne Open detonation site consisting of 20 pits, 10 of which are currently being utilized. Pit 18-20 (4,000 pounds) NEW, Pit 17 (3,992 pounds) NEW, Pit 16 (3,775 pounds) NEW, Pit 15 (3,536 pounds) NEW, Pit 14 (3,338 pounds) NEW, Pit 13 (3,162 pounds) NEW, Pit 12 (2,976 pounds) NEW, and pit 11 (2,813 pounds) NEW.
Van 2 (Maintenance)
· Boiler The boiler supplies steam to the industrial and housing areas. As you can see there are several different types of corrosives stored in the building this requires the need for emergency wash stations like the one you see here on the pillar.
The newest and first boiler you see here on your right is a 200 horse power “Cleaver Brooks” boiler. The other boilers are 500 horse power “Nebraska” boilers; two of which are currently inactive. An underground storage tank supplies DF-2 fuel to these boilers. In the back of the building is a large generator “No longer in operation.” This generator is used to supply electricity to the entire industrial area.
· Transformer (Babbitt) The Babbitt “Sub-Station” provides electricity for various areas of the installation.
· Cat Creek Dam The Cat Creek Dam is of concrete construction one of three dams in State of Nevada. The Dam is one-hundred twenty-three feet tall and holds up to 50 million gallons. Water from the Rose creek reservoir and our Cottonwood canyon catch basins can be diverted to fill Cat Creek Dam. The Dam supplies our Black Beauty Reservoir with surface water from Mount Grant.
· Boiler This boiler house supplies steam to buildings in in the North Magazine area. An underground storage tank located on the East side of the building supplies DF-2 fuel to the two boilers. The first and newest boiler you see is a “Hurst” 200 horse power boiler. The second boiler is a 500 horse power Nebraska like the one you previously saw in other building.
· PODS (boiler & UST) This boiler house contains a two package boiler which produces steam for demilitarization processing. Also housed in the building are two large compressors which supply air for air logics to run processing equipment in buildings where explosives are demilitarized. The Underground Storage Tank (UST) just to the Northwest of the building provides fuel to the boilers cathodic protection is currently being installed.
· RF9 (Underground Storage Tank) Another underground storage tank resides at RF9 where the high poles exist annotating the location.
· WADF Water Treatment Facility This water treatment facility filters processed water from demilitarization in the Western Area Demilitarization Facility (WADF) removing explosive residue. The water is then transferred to a treated water tank. Samples of the treated water are sent to Reno for testing by a qualified laboratory. This testing is required by the State of Nevada before the water can be released to the evaporation ponds.
· North Mag Roads There are approximately 250 miles of road throughout the installation (both improved and unimproved dirt roads). The network of roadways are required to be maintained by the operating contractor. Maintenance to improved roads consists of crack sealing, fog sealing, chip sealing and placing new asphalt. Unimproved roads are maintained by blading.
· Railroad Mechanics Shop contains an aboveground storage tank which provides fuel to heavy equipment.
· Underground storage tanks – entering Central Mag An underground storage tank used for providing fuel to contractor fleet vehicles.
· Underground storage tanks Central Compound Another underground storage tank is located in central magazine area.
· Central mag drive around (road condition) The roads are required to be maintained by the operating contractor. This is done by crack sealing, fog sealing and chip sealing.
· Dock Boiler This boiler provides steam to dock for heating during the winter months. Temperatures during the winter months range anywhere from 34 degrees Fahrenheit to -18 degrees based upon wind chill. In the summer months cooling is provided by explosion proof “Port-a-coolers” Temperatures during the summer months can exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Across the compound on the west side is a compressor which provide air to power pneumatic tools and hoists within the Dock building.
