V. Policy

All CDP federal and contract employees shall present a professional appearance, in regards to personal hygiene, grooming, and neatness of dress in all work sellings. This policy is intended to describe guidelines of appropriate dress for the workplace. These guidelines are not intended to be all inclusive, but rather set the genera! parameters for appropriate attire, and allow employees to use good judgment about items not specifically addressed. Each director (or designee) is to scl a standard for level of dress based on work functions, work environment, contact with students, and special events.

A. Workplace Attire Categories

1. Business Attire: Men's attire includes suits, sport coats, dress slacks, dress shirts with collars, and ties. Women's attire includes dresses, skirts, pant suits, dress slacks with blouses and sweaters. Dress shoes with socks/stockings should be worn.

2. Business Casual Attire: Business casual is basically dressing professionally, but comfortably. It should create a relaxed, comfortable appearance, but still look neat and smart. Acceptable attire includes casual or dress slacks, dresses or skirts, blouses, polo shirts, collared long-sleeved or short-sleeved shirts including

DHS/FEMA shirts, sweaters, and cardigans. Footwear should be selected according to the type of work performed, keeping safety, comfort and professional appearance in mind. The business casual attire also includes a

"Casual Friday" which allows for the wearing ofjeans/denim wear, athletic shoes.

CDP Directive 11-16 or capris (for women) each Friday. Appropriate length of capris shall be mid calf in length or longer. The following exceptions apply to "Casual Friday":

a. CDP tours and/or Very Important Person (VIP) visits: Some visits and tours occurring on Fridays may require uniformed staff representation. To ensure appropriate attire for these events, federal and contract staff who are required to assist will receive timely prior notification.

b. Miscellaneous exception: While "Casual Friday" is intended for CDP-wide implementation, in order to project a professional image as we train students, it is acknowledged that it may not be appropriate for all employees to participate every week. One exception will continue to be instructors who have classes in session on Friday. Supervisors may determine that there are other occasions to disallow participation on a periodic basis.

3. Casual Attire: Casual attire will include work pants, blue jeans (closed seams and not frayed or torn), coveralls, work shirts, T-shirts, sweatshirts with work boots or athletic shoes. Shoes should be appropriate to the work environment.

4. Uniform Attire: Uniforms as prescribed by the department must be worn during duty hours, and in transit to and from work. They must be clean, neatly pressed and in good repair when reporting to work.

B. Accessories/Grooming: Sunglasses may not be worn indoors, unless prescribed by a physician. Tattoos are to be covered by clothing if at all possible for those employees who have contact with the public. Employees may wearjewelry while working that is professional and appropriate to their position. Body piercings and related adornments, except for limited earrings in the ear lobe, are to be covered by clothing or not worn by employees who have contact with the public. Colognes and perfumes should be used sparingly as many people are allergic to the chemicals in fragrances.

Unnatural hair colors are not permitted (e.g. green, purple, blue, etc.). Facial hair, if worn, should be well-groomed. Nails should be clean and well groomed.

C. Inappropriate attire in any of the above listed categories would include shorts (of any length), sweat pants or workout attire; sheer clothing or clothing that is excessively revealing, distracting or provocative; halter or tank tops; dresses/skirts that are excessively short; plastic or rubber flip-flops; jeans with holes, rips, frayed edges, excessive dirt, mud or paint; and sundresses, beach dresses, and spaghetti-strap dresses/shirts.
