U.S. BUREAU OF CUSTOMS AND BORDER PROTECTION
MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATOR
SUMMARY OF THE MEDICAL STANDARDS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical and medical requirements for the Motor Vehicle Operator position are based on the strenuous and potentially hazardous nature of the duties typically performed. Any medical or psychiatric condition may result in the candidate s medical disqualification under certain circumstances. Such circumstances exist when: the condition would affect the ability of the individual to safely and efficiently perform the essential functions of the position, recurrence of the condition cannot be ruled out, and/or performance of the position s duties is likely to result in harm to self or others. The Bureau of Customs and Border Protection determines the individual s medical suitability for the position and does so on a case by case basis.
Description of Work and Environmental Conditions Assignments involve vehicle operation, periodic vehicle repair, and loading and unloading cargo. There is exposure to all weather conditions, dirt, grease, and exhaust.
There is the potential to sustain injury while operating the vehicle, making vehicle hookups (e.g., towing equipment), or loading and unloading equipment and merchandise.
Most work is performed outdoors, and can involve extreme and adverse weather conditions. The individual is required to follow prescribed safety procedures. Driving vehicles on and off the duty location is routine.
Physical Requirements Light physical effort is used in reaching, bending, turning or driving. Moderate physical effort is frequently required to handle objects weighing up to 20 pounds while loading and unloading cargo. Moderate physical effort is required to secure vehicle couplings (chains, tow equipment), lift furniture and equipment, or to make vehicle repairs (change tires).
The work can require working in awkward and uncomfortable positions. This includes lifting, bending, stooping, crawling under vehicles and making repairs in other tight spaces. The Motor Vehicle Operator must possess good eye-hand coordination, finger dexterity and reasonable comprehension and communication skills. He/she must be able to work alone and/or with others. The individual must be able to operate a motor vehicle safely and efficiently and must be able to do so under adverse weather and visual conditions. A valid state driver s license is required.
