U.S. BUREAU OF CUSTOMS AND BORDER PROTECTION

MAINTENANCE MECHANIC

SUMMARY OF THE MEDICAL STANDARDS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical and medical requirements for the maintenance mechanic position are based on the strenuous and potentially hazardous nature of the duties typically performed. Any medical or psychiatric condition may result in the candidate s medical disqualification under certain circumstances. Such circumstances exist when: the condition would affect the ability of the individual to safely and efficiently perform the essential functions of the position, recurrence of the condition cannot be ruled out, and/or performance of the position s duties is likely to result in harm to self or others. The Bureau of Customs and Border Protection determines an individual s medical suitability for the position and does so on a case by case basis.

Description of Work and Environmental Conditions The position s duties include the upkeep and maintenance of buildings, grounds, fixtures and utilities. This includes, but is not limited to, work related to the installation and maintenance of electrical and air conditioning equipment. It also includes pipefitting, painting, plumbing and carpentry tasks, many of which require the use of power tools.

The work requires moderate to strenuous effort. There is significant exposure to dirt, dust, grease, hazardous fluids, fumes and electrical conductors. There is the potential to sustain burns, chemical irritations, shocks, and other significant injuries and respiratory compromise. Work may be performed indoors and outdoors under extreme and adverse weather and visual conditions. It may be performed at more than moderate heights on scaffolds, ladders and roofs. The individual is required to follow prescribed safety procedures and to use safety equipment such as safety shoes and glasses, respirators and other protective equipment. He/she is expected to operate a variety of machines, power tools and vehicles, and to do so safely and efficiently. Shift work, call back and emergency overtime may also be regular requirements of the position.

Physical Requirements Assignments often require working in tiring, awkward and uncomfortable positions. This includes standing for long periods of time, bending, stooping, and making repairs in tight spaces. The maintenance mechanic must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing over 50 pounds. He/she must be able to move moderately heavy items (over 60 pounds) with assistance or with mechanical devices. The maintenance mechanic must possess good eye-hand coordination, finger dexterity and reasonable comprehension and communication skills. He/she may be required to work alone or with others. The individual must be able to operate a motor vehicle and other support equipment safely and efficiently and must be able to do so under adverse weather and visual conditions.

A valid state driver s license is required.

Specific Requirements Visual acuity correctable to a minimum of 20/40 in the better eye, for near and far vision.

Ability to distinguish different colors. Normal conversational hearing (use of hearing aids is acceptable): hearing loss not greater than the average of 30dB at 500, 1000, 2000 and 3000Hz in the better ear.
