U.S. AIR FORCE

Successes In partnership with the Hawaiian Center for Advanced Transportation Technologies (HCATT), APTO is transforming the Hawaii Air National Guard Complex into an integrated energy test center for alternative energy technologies to achieve a clean, secure, and resilient microgrid.

The Basic Expeditionary Airmen Skills Training (BEAST) site at Lackland Air Force Base (AFB) provides field training for 39,000 enlisted each year. APTO is teaming with the Civil Engineering Basic Expeditionary Airfield Resources (BEAR) Office to construct a test and training site to expose these Airmen to state-of-the-art expeditionary energy technologies.

Working alongside Air Mobility Command and the C-17 Program Office, APTO is aiming to make it easier to refuel high-inertia cargo aircraft. Through software modifications that reduce the time delay in the fine precision adjustments, APTO is working to save the Air Force over 20M gallons of fuel/year.

Coordinated with the Air Force Sustainment Center and the Ogden Air Logistics Complex, APTO led a team of industry experts to help identify and address several significant energy users including plating/dip tanks, paint/ depaint booths, and engine test cells. This is one step towards baselining, benchmarking, and optimizing energy usage throughout the Air Logistics Complexes.

In collaboration with the Life Cycle Management Center’s Support Equipment and Vehicles Division, and the 441st Vehicle Support Chain Operations Squadron, APTO is determined to improve both fuel efficiency and the operating environment of flightline equipment and base fleet vehicles.

Advanced Power Technology Office

Who We Are The Advanced Power Technology Office (APTO) resides in the Air Force Research Laboratory’s (AFRL) Materials and Manufacturing Directorate (RX) Systems Support Division (RXS) Acquisition Systems Support Branch (RXSC).

APTO’s mission is to enable the transition and integration of advanced power and alternative energy technologies into the Air Force’s inventory of ground vehicles, aerospace ground support equipment, Basic Expeditionary Airfield Resources (BEAR), and base infrastructure through the progression of Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) while ensuring environmental responsibility.

Many of our experts from military, civilian, contract and academia are certified acquisition program managers.

What We Do APTO leads and manages the identification, assessment, transition, and integration of Advanced Power technologies for the Air Force, enabling Program Offices and Major Commands (MAJCOMs) to meet Energy Strategic Plan goals.

Mission Statement …integration of advanced power and alternative energy technologies…

Advanced Power Technology Office

PURPOSE

Part of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), the Advanced Power Technology Office (APTO) is the premier organization driving the transition and implementation of next generation energy technologies while ensuring environmental responsibility.

APTO’s expertise lies in our ability to identify, assess, develop, and demonstrate technologies that provide increased capabilities and benefits to the customer.

APTO’s experts have successfully executed over $150M over the past four years on technologies ranging from photovoltaic and wind to energy storage and smart controllers.

In alignment with varying customers, APTO is subdivided into five working groups:

Industrial Process Energy Vision

Energy reduction and independence through real-time energy awareness and optimized energy usage and control leveraging enterprise-wide visualization of data from disparate control systems.

Integration of condition-based maintenance and manufacturing schedules into an overarching installation energy management system. Certified ISO 50001 and Superior Energy Performance manufacturing and maintenance facilities driving continuous improvement in energy management.

Installation Readiness Vision Resilient, reliable, and secure installation microgrids with distributed, on-site alternative energy generation utilizing smart controllers, building automation, and an overarching energy management system.

Expeditionary Energy Vision Enhanced operations with self-sufficient deployed forces achieved through on-site energy generation, energy efficiency improvements, waste and waste water reduction/reuse, and smart microgrids.

STRATEGIC CONTEXT

APTO receives guidance from numerous sources including the Air Force Science and Technology Strategy, the current AFRL Energy Science and Technology Portfolio, and the Air Force Core Function Support Plans, as well as through close partnership with the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Installations, Environment, and Energy (SAF/IE); the Air Force Office of Energy Assurance (AFOEA); and the Resilient Energy Demonstration Initiative (REDI) Program.

Ground Support Energy Vision

Improved operations with advanced energy solutions for aerospace ground vehicles, aerospace ground equipment, and base fleet vehicles that are adaptable to local resources, right-sized, and more effective.

Aviation Energy Vision Reduced fuel consumption, increased range/endurance, increased flexibility, and increased effectiveness of both legacy and next generation aircraft through advanced energy solutions.

Improved algorithms to aid in detecting and mitigating wind turbine radar disturbances and qualification and alleviation of solar field glint/glare concerns. Actively reduce Air Force’s $9B fuel budget through renewables siting to weight-reduction, drag reduction, engine design, and software modifications.

APTO is the honest broker for energy technologies, meeting customers’ operational needs while maintaining a balance between energy resiliency/ reliability, cost-effectiveness, and environmental responsibility.
