1.3. DEFINITIONS
1.3.1. AERIAL DELIVERY GRAVITY ROLLER CONVEYOR
The aerial delivery gravity roller conveyor is used to transport the various types of pallets defined below in a straight line.
The aerial delivery gravity roller conveyor consists of four gravity roller sections, two six inches wide and two twelve inches wide, two guide rails, and pallet stops.
1.3.2. PALLETS
Airdrop loads consist of 463L pallets (both orientations), heavies, and container delivery system pallets. References to pallets shall refer to all types listed above and detailed below:
1.3.2.1. 463L PALLET
The 463L pallet consists of an end-grain balsa-wood or redwood core sandwiched between two sheets of aluminum with frames on all sides consisting of extruded aluminum edge rails. Steel
FA8604-20-R-8116 Attachment 4 Page 6 of 33 tie-down rings are distributed around the perimeter of the pallet to secure nets and to facilitate handling. The entire pallet measures 108 inches wide by 88 inches long by 2.25 inches thick. Cargo on 463L pallets is normally no higher than 96 inches, but over height pallets may be stacked up to 156 inches high for transport on C-5 aircraft. The pallet has a rated capacity of 10,000 pounds and weighs approximately 290 pounds.
Nets and straps add an average of 65 pounds for a total pallet tare weight of 355 pounds. 463L pallets can be utilized in both orientations. The orientation with the 108-inch edge leading is called wide-edge leading. The orientation with the 88-inch edge leading is called narrow-edge leading.
1.3.2.2. HEAVIES
An aluminum-faced pallet measuring approximately 108 inches wide and 2.25 inches thick used to airdrop heavy equipment. Heavies are modular in length and weight capacity, but for the purposes of this project the length will be limited to 96 inches or 104 inches (96 inch base plus front and rear bumpers) and the gross weight of each heavies pallet load is often 2520 pounds for training missions, but can range from 0 to a maximum of 10,500 pounds. The leading edge often consists of an angled bumper, resulting in a front edge that is not flat. Four runners approximately 11 inches wide span the full length of the underside of the pallet. These runners are the only portion of the pallet available to contact the conveyor rollers.
1.3.2.3. CONTAINER DELIVERY SYSTEM (CDS)
A CDS is an aerial delivery load using a plywood sheet measuring 48 inches wide by 48 inches long and 0.75 inches thick. For training missions, CDS loads range from a minimum of 500 pounds to a maximum load of 2200 pounds each, but the minimum load is 0 pounds.
1.3.2.4. PALLET CONDITIONS
The following pallet conditions shall be assumed for all types of pallets.
1.3.2.4.1. NON-FLATNESS
Approximately two-thirds of the maximum possible pallet contact is made with the rollers, a condition that results from the pallet surface being warped. The bottom surface of unloaded pallets can deflect up to 0.31-inch from level. The deflection of loaded pallets varies with specific loading conditions.
FA8604-20-R-8116 Attachment 4 Page 7 of 33
1.3.2.4.2. RESTRAINING STRAPS
Cargo restraining straps may hang below the pallet edges. These straps shall not become entangled in structure or transfer elements nor shall they interfere with any sensing or control devices.
1.3.2.4.3. LOAD DISTRIBUTION
Pallet weights range from fully loaded to empty. The center of gravity may deviate by as much as 10 inches from the center of the pallet.
1.3.3. PALLET HANDLING
The following type of government-furnished equipment is used to handle pallet loads.
1.3.3.1. K-LOADER
A K-loader is a military transport vehicle with a powered rollerized deck to assist with transport of pallets between aircraft and fixed conveyor systems. The K-loader interfaces with the conveyors at a K-loader interface. The K-loader has a platform that can be positioned at various heights off the ground. There are two types of K-loaders. The 60k-loader (Tunner) can carry up to six 463L pallets with a total net weight up to 60,000 pounds. The 60k-loader weighs about 65,000 pounds and the powered deck can be positioned at all elevations between 39 inches and 222 inches. The 25k-loader (Halvorsen) can carry up to three 463L pallets with a total net weight up to 25,000 pounds. The 25k-loader weights approximately 32,000 pounds. The deck of the 25k-loader can be positioned at all elevations between 38 and 156 inches.
