The AIBU is a major component of the F-16 C/D avionics systems. Radar, electronic warfare, navigation and communications depend upon the proper operation of the AIBU to coordinate signal emissions and receptions. If the AIBU should fail, the pilot could not operate the radar, electronic warfare, navigation, and communication systems at the same time. The item is critical for ensuring reduced vulnerability to threats and increased survivability in a combat operational environment. Failure or poor operation of this item can compromise mission capability up to and including loss of aircraft and life. Qualification testing is essential to ensure the item will properly function in the operational environment.
