PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 CONDITION OF SURFACES

3.1.1 Inspection of Surfaces

Surfaces on which vapor barrier and insulation are to be installed shall be clean, smooth and dry. Surfaces receiving vapor barrier shall also be free of projections which might puncture the vapor barrier. Condition of surfaces shall be inspected and approved by the Contracting Officer’s

Technical Representative immediately before installation is started.

3.1.2 Preparation of Surfaces

Check roof deck surfaces, including surfaces sloped to roof drains and outlets, for defects before work is started; correct defects and inaccuracies in roof deck surface to eliminate hollow and low spots.

Examine steel decks to assure that panels are properly secured to structural members and to each other and that surfaces of top flanges are flat or slightly convex, and are without stiffening grooves.

3.2 APPLICATION

Keep roof insulating materials dry before, during and after installation.

Keep insulation 12 millimeters clear of vertical surfaces penetrating and projecting from the roof surface.

3.2.1 Vapor Barrier

Install vapor barrier in direct contact with concrete deck surface.

Vapor barrier shall consist of one ply of asphalt-saturated felt weighing

700 grams per square meter. Prime concrete deck with asphalt primer and solid mop the asphalt base sheet, lap each sheet 100 millimeters over the preceding sheet. Provide end laps not less than 100 millimeters and stagger laps a minimum of 300 millimeters. Cement together side and end laps with a solid mopping of steep asphalt. Extend 200 millimeters up roof curbs and strip flash at metal flashing flanges.

3.2.2 Temperature of Steep Asphalt

When installing insulation, apply asphalt when temperature of asphalt is within 5 degrees Centigrade of equiviscous temperature (EVT). Do not heat asphalt to or above flash point (FP). Do not heat asphalt above the

Section 07220 7 finish blowing temperature (FBT) for longer than 4 consecutive hours. Use thermometers to check temperatures during heating and application. Have kettlemen in attendance at all times during the heating process to insure that maximum temperature specified are not exceeded.

3.2.3 Wood Nailers

Verify prior to installation of insulation that nailers the same thickness as insulation have been provided at eaves, edges, curbs, walls, and roof openings for securing cant strips, gravel stops, gutters and flashing flanges.

3.2.4 Insulation

3.2.4.1 Insulation Installation

Install insulation directly over the vapor barrier. Lay insulation so that end joints of each course break with those of adjoining courses.

When using multiple layers insulation, joints of each succeeding layer shall be parallel and broken in both directions with respect to the layer below. Firmly embed each layer in a solid steep asphalt mopping; mop only sufficient area to provide complete embedment of one board at a time.

Use not less than 1 kilograms of asphalt per square meter of roof slab for mopping of insulation in place, except for the layer of insulation in contact with steel deck which shall be ribbon or strip-mopped.

Furthermore the installation of the insulating system shall be in compliance with the instructions of the selected roof metal covering manufacturer.

3.2.4.2 Insulation on Poured Concrete Decks

Solidly apply asphalt primer at the rate of one half liter per square meter of roof surface.

3.2.4.3 Insulation on Steel Deck

Strip-mop supporting surface of steel deck at the rate of one half liter of steep asphalt per square meter of roof surface. Apply steep asphalt in ribbons parallel to the ribs on every flange of steel deck for 150 mm rib spacing. On decks with 200 mm rib spacing, apply two ribbons on each flange. Do not permit steep asphalt to flow into ribs of decking. Place insulation while the asphalt is still hot and fluid. Insulation joints shall occur on solid bearing surfaces only, not over open ribs. When multiple layers of insulation are used, mop in the second layer and all succeeding layers as specified herein for mopping layers of insulation in place.

3.2.4.4 Fastening of Insulation on Steel Decks

Provide penetrating-type fasteners in addition to applying steep asphalt for one meter wide strip around perimeter of steel decks regardless of roof slope. Unless approved otherwise, install fasteners in two rows spaced 500 mm apart, staggered and spaced in each row not to exceed 300 mm on centers. Engage fasteners by driving them into top flange of steel deck. If multiple layers of insulation are provided to meet the conductance value or other requirements specified herein, secure first layer with fasteners in addition to mopping, and mop subsequent layers securely in place. Fastening shall conform to the selected insulating system manufacturer’s instructions.

8 Section 07220

3.2.4.5 Cant strips

Where indicated, provide cant strips at intersections of the roof with walls, parapets and curbs extending above the roof. The face of cant strips shall have an incline of 45 degrees. Cant strips shall bear on the wood nailers and fit flush against vertical surfaces. Where possible, nail cant strips to adjoining surfaces. Where cant strips are installed against non-nailable materials, install cant strips in a heavy mopping of steep asphalt or set in asphalt roof cement.

3.2.4.6 Tapered Edge Strips

Where indicated, provide edge strips in the right-angle formed by the junction of the roof and wood nailing strips that extend above the level of the roof. Edge strips shall be tapered from top of wood nailing strips to approximately 3 mm at a slope of 80 mm per meter. Install edge strips flush against vertical surfaces of wood nailing strips. Where possible, nail edge strips to adjoining surfaces. Where installed against non-nailable materials, install edge strips in a heavy mopping of steep asphalt or set in asphalt roof cement.

3.3 PROTECTION OF APPLIED INSULATION

Completely cover each day's installation of insulation with finished roofing specified in Section 07321, "Clay Roofing Tiles." Protect open ends of each day's work with temporary water cut-offs then remove when work is resumed. Protect open spaces at curbs, scuttles, and expansion joints, until permanent roofing and flashing is applied. Storing, walking, wheeling, or trucking will not be permitted directly on insulation or on roofed surfaces. Provide smooth, clean board or plank walkways, runways and platforms near supports, as necessary, to distribute weight to conform to indicated live load limits of roof construction.
