About this file
This document is a product information sheet from Global Finishing Solutions describing carbon adsorption cells used for air filtration in spray painting operations.
Carbon adsorption is presented as an economical method for capturing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted during spray painting, with properly sized carbon capable of retaining 95% of hydrocarbon compounds, including diesel fumes. Carbon cells are square or rectangular in shape, with typical standard sizes of 20"x20"x3", 24"x24"x3", and 24"x24"x4". These cells fit standard air handler filter frames and are easy to service and replace. A 24" square cell measuring 3" thick can hold approximately 36 pounds of carbon granules, with 12 pounds of granules holding approximately 1 pound of VOC. The cells are rated for a velocity of 120 feet per minute through the filter and provide a residence time of 0.125 seconds, which allows for 100% capture of hydrocarbons in the airstream. While adsorption rates vary based on chemical composition, the residence time covers most chemicals known in paint compounds. Carbon cells are sensitive to fouling and require high-efficiency prefiltration ahead of them to protect the filter surface. In humid climates, carbon adsorption requires air drying or dehumidification prior to the carbon bed. The document includes photographs illustrating carbon filter installation in a paint spray booth exhaust chamber.
