RUNWAY – 111111

SHORT TITLE: RUNWAY

RPA TYPE CODE: LS

UM1: SY

UM2: LF

FAC: 1111

FAC TITLE: Fixed-Wing Runway, Surfaced

FUM: SY

Paved surface provided for normal aircraft takeoffs and landings. This category includes crosswind, parallel, primary, instrument and instrument type runways. The runway is the paved surface provided for normal aircraft landings and takeoffs. For shortfield operations, a special paved strip is provided, category code 116-116. For normal helicopter operations, a square pad is provided, category code 116-663. In addition to the actual paving of the runway, category code 116-663 includes grading and drainage of the runway, runway shoulders, lateral safety zones, and clear zone (See AFJMAN 32-1013). (per AFH 32-1084)

Runways, Taxiways and Ramps: A RUNWAY is differentiated from other surfaces on the airfield by being the only surface an aircraft (other than a helicopter) either lands on or takes off from. Runways may also be used for taxiing aircraft and in some cases for parking aircraft. Runways are always designated (and normally marked) by a one or two number label, loosely associated with their compass bearing. In other words, a runway oriented north-south might be designated 36/18, but might also be identified as 35/17 or 01/19. Runway markings are always white. Runways are also bordered by white lights.

OVERRUN, PAVED – 111115

SHORT TITLE: OVERRUN, PAVED

RPA TYPE CODE: LS

UM1: SY

UM2: LF

FAC: 1113

FAC TITLE: Runway Overrun Area, Surfaced

FUM: SY

An extension of the runway pavement excluding shoulders. Cost includes asphalt surface, base, sub-base, and striping (excluding shoulders). An overrun is an extension of the length of the runway pavement.

The runway overrun is the portion of the overrun area that is an extension of the runway pavement (excluding shoulders). Because of the possibility of short landings and approach end engagement of aircraft arresting barriers, runway overruns are paved to the following standards: Length: 300 m (1,000 ft) on each end of heavy, modified heavy, medium-light load and auxiliary runways, and 90 m (300 ft) on each end of a shortfield runway and ACR (Alternate Combat Runway). (AFH 32-1084)

Blast pads, also known as overrun areas or stopways, are often constructed just before the start of a runway where jet blast produced by large planes during the takeoff roll could otherwise erode the ground and eventually damage the runway. Overrun areas are also constructed at the end of runways as emergency space to slowly stop planes that overrun the runway on a landing gone wrong, or to slowly stop a plane on a rejected takeoff or a takeoff gone wrong. Blast pads are often not as strong as the main paved surface of the runway and are marked with yellow chevrons. Planes are not allowed to taxi, take off or land on blast pads, except in an emergency.

Runway overruns keep the probability of serious damage to an aircraft to a minimum in the event that the aircraft runs off the runway end during a takeoff or landing, or lands short during a landing. Overruns are required for the landing and takeoff area. Table 3-4 shows the dimensional requirements for overruns. Overrun profiles are shown in Figure 3-3, and an overrun layout is shown in figures 3-7, 3-10, 3-13, and 3-16. USAF and Army design and construction requirements are covered in UFC 3-260-02 (Chapter 10, under "Special Areas"). Additionally, for all services, manholes, hand holes, and drainage structures constructed within this area should, at a minimum, be designed as provided in this section of the manual. (NOTE: These requirements do not apply to projects already under design prior to the publication date of this manual.) The top surface of foundations should be flush with the grade. Sub-grade structures are not designed to support aircraft wheel loads beyond the paved and unpaved areas of the overrun. Maintenance action is required if the drop-off at the top edge of the foundation exceeds 76 mm (3 in).

Shoulder Width. The total width of the shoulder (paved and unpaved) is normally 61 m (200 ft) each side of the runway and along the entire length of paved overruns. Exceptions are shortfield, ACR, “Class A runways”, and helicopter strips, which have shoulder widths of 6.1 m (20 ft), 1.2 m (4 ft), 15.2 m (50 ft), and 7.6 m (25 ft), respectively. (AFH 32-1084)

Pavement provided for ground movement of aircraft. They connect the parking and maintenance areas of the airfield with the runways and provide access to the hangars, docks, and various parking areas and pads.

Taxiways are the pavements provided for the ground movement of aircraft. Taxiways connect the parking and maintenance areas of the airfield with the runways and provide access to hangars, docks, and various parking aprons and pads. Taxiways are normally parallel to runways to facilitate aircraft ground movement on the taxiways during landings and takeoffs on the runway.

Taxiway markings are always yellow. Most have yellow centerline markings to facilitate remaining in the center of, and following the taxiway in reduced visibility. They may also be bordered by blue lights and may have blue lights embedded in the centerline.

Taxiway Width. A taxiway width of 15.2 m (50 ft) and 22.9 m (75 ft) are standard for class A and B runways, respectively, with the following exceptions: Shortfield - 15.2 m (50 ft) with a turning radii of 21.3m (70 ft); ACR -

10.7 m (35 ft); C-17 - 15.2 m (50 ft); Helicopter - 15.2 m (50 ft).

UM1: SY

UM2:

FAC: 1131

FAC TITLE: Aircraft Apron, Surfaced

Pavement provided for aircraft parking, servicing, and loading.

AFCatcodes 2016 v1.0 Page 5

The apron is the area of airfield where aircraft are parked, unloaded or loaded, refueled, or boarded. Although the use of the apron is covered by regulations, such as lighting on vehicles, it is typically more accessible to users than the runway or taxiway.

There are no standard apron sizes. Aprons are individually designed to support specific aircraft and missions at specific installations. The detailed dimensions are determined by the size, type, and number of aircraft requiring parking and maneuvering space; the type of activity the apron serves; the physical characteristics of the project site;

and the objectives of the installation master plan. (AFH 32-1084).

PRECISION APPROACH RADAR – 116401

SHORT TITLE: PAR

RPA TYPE CODE: LS

UM1: SY

UM2:

FAC: 1164

FAC TITLE: Miscellaneous Airfield Pavement, Surfaced

FUM: SY

The Precision Approach Radar (PAR) pad is a paved hardstand provided to support the PAR equipment in operating position. The hardstand must be a minimum of 146 square meters (12.1 meters by 12.1 meters) (178 SY (40 feet by 40 feet)). At installations where PAR approaches are provided to more than one runway by a single PAR unit, a turntable is provided to allow PAR service to more than one runway.

Precision approach radar (PAR) is a type of radar guidance system designed to provide lateral and vertical guidance to an aircraft pilot for landing, until the landing threshold is reached. After the aircraft reaches the decision height (DH) or decision altitude (DA), guidance is advisory only. Controllers monitoring the PAR displays observe each aircraft's position and issue instructions to the pilot that keep the aircraft on course and glide-path during final approach. It is similar to an instrument landing system (ILS) but requires control instructions. One type of instrument approach that can make use of PAR is the ground-controlled approach (GCA). Air traffic controllers

AFCatcodes 2016 v1.0 Page 7 must transmit a minimum of every 5 seconds to the pilot their relation to the azimuth portion and, once intercepting the glide-path, their elevation. The approach is terminated when the aircraft reaches the OCA/H (Obstacle Clearance Altitude/Height). Nevertheless, information is provided till threshold and aircraft may be monitored by controller till touchdown. Controller in charge of PAR should not be responsible for any duty other than the PAR approach concerned.

The upper portion of the display indicates elevation, the lower portion azimuth. Controllers must be able to interpret radar returns for the azimuth as a "top view" to inform them if the aircraft is left or right of course.

Precision approach radars are most frequently used at military air traffic control facilities. Many of these facilities use the AN/FPN-63, AN/MPN, or AN/TPN-22. These radars can provide precision guidance to a distance of 10 to 20 miles. The OJ-333 Radar scope is the indicator which the air traffic controller uses to provide instructions to the pilots

SHOULDER, PAVED – 116642

SHORT TITLE: SHLDR, PAVED

RPA TYPE CODE: LS

UM1: SY

UM2:

FAC: 1165

FAC TITLE: Aircraft Pavement Shoulder

FUM: SY

The shoulders of runways, taxi-ways, etc.

Taxi Shoulder Markings. Taxiways, holding bays, and aprons are sometimes provided with paved shoulders to prevent blast and water erosion. Shoulders are not intended for use by aircraft, and may be unable to carry the aircraft load. Taxiway shoulder markings are yellow lines perpendicular to taxiway edge, from taxiway edge to pavement edge, about 3 meters.

The shoulders of runways, aprons, taxiways, and airfield pads are paved when it is necessary to protect the shoulder areas against jet blast, reduce maintenance of the unpaved shoulder area, support aircraft outrigger gear, or accommodate snow removal equipment, aircraft service vehicles and emergency vehicles. When shoulders are without vegetation and unprotected, continual exposure to jet blast will release soil, stones, and other debris (known as FOD) that can be ingested by jet engines and cause engine damage. OPERATING STORAGE, AVIATION GAS – 124131

SHORT TITLE: OPG STOR, AVGAS

RPA TYPE CODE: S

UM1: GA

UM2:

FAC: 1241

FAC TITLE: Aircraft Operating Fuel Storage

FUM: GA

Storage tanks that provide an operating and reserve supply of aviation fuel. Operating fuel tanks are typically in the range of 5,000 gallons to 420,000 gallons (420,000 gallons is equal to 10,000 barrels). FAC includes the containment structures in support of the storage tanks such as containment berms, liners, and monitoring wells.

Operating tanks are normally provided for pressurized hydrant fueling systems and are required whenever the distance from the fueling apron to the bulk storage area exceeds one mile. Tanks may be required at certain overseas installations where the separation distance is less than a mile; specifically, where there are special fueling facilities, such as pressure type hot refueling or in-shelter refueling systems, and the provision of operating tanks can be justified by the responsible command HQ on the basis of survivability. In these cases, bulk storage tanks are sometimes converted to operating tanks providing back-up capability for pressure type fueling systems. Fuel is transferred by pipeline from the bulk storage tanks to the operating tanks. The operating tanks will be vertical aboveground tanks, wherever possible. Two tanks are required for each hydrant fueling system. Operational tank size shall be based on the mission support requirements as determined by the MAJCOM Fuels Facility Engineer and

MAJCOM/LGSF.

For active force bases, 10,000 barrel operating storage tanks for hydrant systems should be the minimum size with up to 55,000 barrels authorized depending on total base war time stockage objectives. Siting adjacency consideration should be given to proximity to pressurized hydrant fueling system pump houses. These facilities should also be located as close as possible to the aircraft parking apron to minimize hydraulic surge and system cost.

The Military Auxiliary Radio System (MARS) is a United States Department of Defense sponsored program, established as a separately managed and operated program by the United States Army, Navy, and Air Force. The program is a civilian auxiliary consisting primarily of licensed amateur radio operators who are interested in assisting the military with communications on a local, national, and international basis as an adjunct to normal communications. The MARS programs also include active duty, reserve, and National Guard units; Navy, Marine Corps, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ships, and Coast Guard cutters and shore stations.

MARS has a long history of providing worldwide auxiliary emergency communications during times of need. The combined three-service MARS programs (Army, Air Force, and Navy–Marine Corps) volunteer force of over 5,000 dedicated and skilled amateur radio operators provide the backbone of the MARS program. The main benefit of MARS membership is enjoying the amateur radio hobby through an ever-expanding horizon of MARS service to the nation. MARS members work by the slogan "Proudly serving those who serve".

Special communications facility that houses high power UHF Radio Transmitters and receivers with large parabolic antennas capable of communicating beyond 150 miles by "scattering" off the troposphere. The facility is also used to span rugged terrain beyond the range of microwave equipment, typically used in arctic and remote regions.

Ultra high frequency (UHF) is the ITU designation for radio frequencies in the range between 300 MHz and 3 GHz, also known as the decimetre band as the wavelengths range from one to ten decimetres. Radio waves with frequencies above the UHF band fall into the SHF (super-high frequency) or microwave frequency range. Lower frequency signals fall into the VHF (very high frequency) or lower bands. UHF radio waves propagate mainly by line of sight; they are blocked by hills and large buildings although the transmission through building walls is high enough for indoor reception. They are used for television broadcasting, cordless phones, walkie-talkies, personal radio services satellite communication, cell phones and numerous other applications.

AUTODIN Security

SHORT TITLE: AUTO SWITCHING CEN

RPA TYPE CODE: B

UM1: SF

UM2:

FAC: 1311

FAC TITLE: Communications Building

FUM: SF

Facility which transmits and receives AUTODIN messages to and from Military communications centers worldwide. Every ASC is housed in a special compartmented information facility and is equipped with solid state uninterruptible power systems and environmental controls.

Required security protection must be extended to all classified traffic transmitted through the AUTODIN. The ASC automatically checks and compares the security classification stated in the header of the message against the authorized security level of the incoming circuit. Transmission of a message with a higher security level than authorized will result in the message being rejected by the ASC.

In addition, an automatic system-generated service will be transmitted by the ASC to the originating station. The purpose of this service is to advise the originating station of possible security compromises. Also, the ASC automatically checks and compares the security classification contained in the header of each message against the security classification of each destination. A security mismatch occurs for each destination that does not indicate a matching security level.

In the event of a security mismatch, the ASC takes the following actions:

In a single-address message, the ASC rejects the message and alarms appear at the originating terminal indicating that the message needs retransmission.

In a multiple-address message with at least one deliverable destination, the ASC accepts the message and delivers it to all valid destinations. For invalid routing indicators, an automatically generated service retransmits the message to the originating routing indicator and advises that the message needs retransmission.

In-station operating procedures should be carefully planned and rigidly enforced to prevent inadvertent transmission of classified messages to unauthorized stations or agencies. Complete security precautions and operating rules are contained in JANAP 128.

AUTODIN = Automatic Digital Network

AFCatcodes 2016 v1.0 Page 47

The Automatic Digital Network System, known as AUTODIN or ADNS, is a legacy data communications service in the United States Department of Defense. AUTODIN originally consisted of numerous AUTODIN Switching Centers (ASCs) located in the United States and in countries such as England and Japan.

(SCIF should be a D record/other allocation under cat code 140422) SCIF = Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility

In United States military, security and intelligence parlance, a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF; pronounced "skiff") is an enclosed area within a building that is used to process Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) types of classified information. SCI is classified information concerning or derived from intelligence sources, methods, or analytical processes, which is required to be handled within formal access control systems established by the Director of National Intelligence (DNI). Some entire buildings are SCIFs where all but the front foyer is secure. Access to SCIFs is normally limited to those with clearance.[1] Non-cleared personnel in SCIF must be under constant oversight to prevent unauthorized access to classified material;[2] as part of this process, non-cleared personnel are typically required to surrender recording and other electronic devices.[3] All of the activity and conversation inside is presumed restricted from public disclosure. A SCIF can also be located in an air, ground or maritime vehicle, or can be established on a temporary basis at a specific site.

Markers on runways to indicate the remaining distance on a runway. Usually in large numerals indicating hundreds or thousands of feet remaining to the end of the runway.

The remaining distance on a runway is indicated by large numerals indicating hundreds or thousands of feet remaining to the end of the runway. The distance markers inform the pilot taking off of the remaining distance to the end of the runway so that the pilot may know whether an aborted takeoff is possible and so that the pilot of a landing aircraft may calculate necessary braking action to stop the aircraft short of the runway end. The marker is constructed of a readily collapsible aluminum angle frame having a triangular base pyramid form. The apex of the pyramid is positioned directly over a standard runway light. Anchors at vertices of the base provide easy anchoring independent of the lighting system. A translucent plate covers one triangular side and is held in place by a triangular retainer made of angle aluminum pieces which fit over corresponding pieces in the frame. A large opaque number is positioned centrally on the plate. (4.3’ x 4.3’)
