Col Vogel…this is the slide that you use to talk about the 82nd Aerial Targets Squadron.
The QF-4/QRF-4C are the DoD’s only Full-scale Aerial Target (FSAT). They support a multitude of Joint and FMS programs and can be used for advanced testing and evaluations of weapons, sensors, and various payloads. The 82nd ATRS flies this aircraft in both manned and unmanned configurations. There are currently almost 75 left in the inventory with a 2/3 – 1/3 split between Tyndall and Holloman. Tyndall will cease flying the QF-4 in 4Q14 and Holloman will cease in 4Q16 – both locations will transition to the QF-16.
The BQM-167 Subscale Aerial Target (SSAT) is the premier target for WSEP as well as various other Joint and FMS programs. The SSAT has over 1 hr of on station time and can carry a multitude of infrared and electronic pods/countermeasures. Each SSAT costs approximately $850K with additive costs for pods/countermeasures. It can fly up to 0.9 Mach and can attain 50K in some configurations.
The E-9 is the USAF’s sole sea surveillance and airborne telemetry platform. It also has UHF and VHF relay/radiate capability. It supports WSEP, Tomahawk, MALD, and a host of other Joint and FMS programs. There are only 2 of these aircraft in the USAF inventory. They normally have a crew of 4 (pilot/copilot/TM/SSR) but can carry up to 9 total people or roughly 1500 lbs of cargo with only a pilot/copilot on board. Maximum speed is about 240 kts, service ceiling of 25K, almost 5 hrs worth of fuel.
WEG Watercraft consists of 2 x 25’ Utility Boats used for clearing of the inner safety corridor and 3 x 120’ Missile Retriever Vessels used for clearing the outer safety corridor as well as SSAT water recovery. SSAT recoveries average almost a dozen per year saving the USAF upwards of $10M annually. These assets are Contractor operated and maintained.
The Gulf Range Drone Control System is the major command/control node that ties together the various assets involved in the testing and evaluation of weapons in the Gulf of Mexico. It is vital to all aspects of the missions that the 82 ATRS executes and supports.
Certain QF-4E’s are specially painted to mimic the primary paint schemes of the Phantom II when it was operational. These are flown in support of ACC’s Heritage Program and participate in roughly 10 shows per year.
All 82nd ATRS assets (except Watercraft) are Mil/GS operated with Contractor maintenance and support. Government oversight is provided through a combination of DCMA, ACC/AMIC, various SPOs and USAF Active Duty military.
