I. MEMORANDUM FOR 30 CES/CEOA
ATTENTION: MR ROBERT CAMPBELL
FROM: 30 AMDS/SGPB
SUBJECT: Asbestos and Paint InspectionIBulk Sampling - Building 860
II I. Background: Per your request wall system materials (presumed asbestos containing materials and paint samples) were collected from Building 860. This action was necessary to determine if asbestos or lead were present in materials to be removed by the CES Hotshot Team during self-help modifications in several areas of the facility.
I 2. Introduction: On 15 Aug 96 Mr. Reichert and Mr. Laughlin of the Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight visited Building 860 to perform the sampling. After collection, the asbestos samples were shipped to Asbestos 'I Management Services (AMS), 7441 Anaconda Avenue, Garden Grove, California, by Federal Express under a
I~
Chain of Custody. Samples were analyzed using Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM). The lead samples were shipped to the Cirrus Environmental Laboratory, 3130 Skyway Drive, Santa Maria, California under a Chain of
Custody. The results for all samples are attached.
II
3. Findings:
a. Asbestos: A total of 16 samples were taken in four homogeneous sampling areas (HSAs). Results are as follows:
I
I~ 'I
GUARDIANS OF THE HIGH FRONTIER
I, 1 b. Lead: A total of three samples were collected in three homogenous sampling areas (HSAs). Results are as follows:
4. Conclusions: With the exception of the sheet rock there is asbestos in the wall system, and lead-based paint is present on the wall systems throughout the facility. Mr Lawrence Doty was notified of the results by facsimile and
1 phone on 19 August 1996 at which time he stated this project would go to contracting rather than be a self-help project.
5. Questions regarding this report or any asbestos or lead related matter may be directed to Mr. Reichert or Mr.
Laughlin at extension 6-4361.
