About this file
This document presents the salient characteristics and technical specifications for a 15-ton commercial direct expansion (DX) split air conditioning system required for a federal facility cooling application. The requirement encompasses both a condensing unit (outdoor component) and an air handling unit (indoor component) that must operate as an AHRI-certified matched set.
The system must deliver approximately 180,000 BTU/hr of cooling capacity and operate on 208/230V, 3-phase, 60Hz power while utilizing EPA-compliant, low-global warming potential refrigerant R-454B; R-22 refrigerant is explicitly prohibited. Energy efficiency must meet or exceed current Department of Energy minimum SEER/IEER ratings. The air-cooled condensing unit requires a scroll-type compressor with internal thermal overload and pressure safety mechanisms, microchannel or copper/aluminum condenser coils with corrosion resistance treatment, factory-installed louvered panels or hail guards for physical protection, and capability for efficient operation up to 115°F ambient conditions. The air handling unit must feature an insulated galvanized steel cabinet, a blower motor sized to meet existing ductwork static pressure and CFM requirements, a direct expansion evaporator coil equipped with either a thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) or electronic expansion valve (EEV), and a factory-installed filter rack accommodating 2-inch MERV 8 filters. These specifications establish the baseline requirements for acceptable "equal" product proposals.

SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
Requirement: 15-Ton Commercial DX Split System (Condensing Unit and Air Handling Unit)
To be considered an acceptable "equal" product, all proposed equipment must adhere to the capabilities outlined below to ensure compatibility with existing infrastructure and meet required facility cooling loads.
1. System-Wide Requirements
• Nominal Capacity: 15 Tons (Approx. 180,000 BTU/hr).
• System Certification: Must be an AHRI-certified matched set.
• Refrigerant Type: EPA-compliant, low-GWP (R-454B). R-22 is not permitted.
• Power Supply: 208/230V, 3-Phase, 60Hz.
• Energy Efficiency: Must meet or exceed current DOE minimum SEER/IEER ratings.
2. Air-Cooled Condensing Unit (Outdoor Unit)
• Compressor: Scroll type with internal thermal overload and pressure safety.
• Condenser Coils: Microchannel or copper/aluminum with corrosion resistance treatment.
• Physical Protection: Factory-installed louvered panels or hail guards.
• Ambient Operation: Rated for efficient operation up to 115°F.
3. Air Handling Unit (Indoor Unit)
• Cabinet: Insulated galvanized steel to prevent condensation.
• Blower Motor: Must meet existing ductwork static pressure and CFM requirements.
• Coil Type: Direct Expansion (DX) evaporator coil with a TXV or EEV.
• Filtration: Must include a factory-installed filter rack for 2-inch MERV 8 filters.
