INTRODUCTION
NOTE All references (if any), in this manual, pertaining to MC-130W airplanes shall now be known as AC-130W airplanes. Any Technical Order (TO) ref-erences to the 1C-130(M)W series shall apply to the corresponding 1C-130(A)W TO. Technical Orders in the 1C-130(M)W series will be transitioned to 1C-130(A)W TO numbers as changes are made to the TO.
NOTE It is very important that the following information be read carefully before using this job guide manual.
This introduction describes the use and arrangement of the manual.
SCOPE.
This manual provides illustrated organizational level main-tenance procedures for lubricating the C-130.
The complete listing of the OMMS is located in TO
1C-130H-2-00GE-00-1.
USE.
This manual has been developed for lubricating the C-130 airplane. Illustrations are provided as a more effective way of using the manual for lubrication tasks.
ARRANGEMENT.
Instructions in this manual are arranged in a function/task format. A task begins with a text page to identify the com-ponents being lubricated. The remaining pages in the task are illustrations of lubrication points.
A function is made up of a task or series of tasks and illus-trations which support lubrication of a system or component.
All steps within a task must be accomplished to complete the task. All tasks within a function must be accomplished to complete the function.
Change 38 iii
Lubrication procedures only locate and WARNING identify lubrication requirements.
These procedures do not give detailed instructions for access or system oper-ation. Observe all system operating procedures and safety precautions in the appropriate maintenance manuals when a system needs to be operated.
Failure to comply could cause injury to personnel and damage to the airplane.
ILLUSTRATIONS.
Illustrations include a location view of equipment and the name for each component part to be lubricated. The name of each lubrication point is identified and located with an index arrow. Each lubrication point includes a symbol to represent the type and method of lubrication. When neces-sary, delta notes are used when further details about the lubrication type or method is required.
Door and actuator positions, control settings, and indication displays shown on illustrations may not match the actual equipment configuration during lubrication.
SAFETY AND HEALTH HAZARDS.
Lubrication activities involve the use of some hazardous lubricants. Also, movement of control surfaces or landing gear can easily injury a mechanic. See Safety Summary for warnings that apply to this volume.
IMPROVEMENT REPORTS.
Recommendations for improvements to this technical order shall be submitted on AFTO Form 22, Technical Manual (TM) Change Recommendation and Reply. Complete AFTO Form 22 in accordance with TO 00-5-1.

SECTION 1
LUBRICATION PROCEDURES
1-1. GENERAL LUBRICATION REQUIREMENTS.
1. General Information. Lubricated surfaces shall be cleaned of moisture, solvents, and contaminants. Never apply lubri-cant over rusted or corroded surfaces. Do not allow body moisture or other agents to contact highly polished surfaces before lubrication. Contact with moisture may cause corro-sion on the polished surfaces. Throughout this manual, speci-fication numbers not preceded by MIL are to be interpreted as Federal Specification numbers.
2. Solid Film Lubrication. The application of solid-film lubri-cant is a manufacturing step that involves cleaning, spraying, and baking. When the film is permanently damaged, the part should be completely refinished or replaced. Solid-film lubri-cant can be identified by a dark gray color which will rub off slightly.
Molybdenum disulfide is flammable and WARNING toxic to skin, eyes, and respiratory tract.
Avoid skin and eye contact. Good general ventilation is normally adequate. Keep away from open flames or other sources of ignition.
Solid-film lubricated parts should not be treated with a wet lubricant. It is permissible to treat undamaged lubricated parts with molybdenum disulfide, Specification MIL-M-7866.
If molybdenum disulfide is used to lubricate the area, a permanent record shall be made and the area inspected frequently.
3. Lubrication Application. Lubricants shall be applied as follows:
a. Clean and dry grease guns and oil cans before filling.
12-20-01 1-1
Aliphatic naphtha is flammable and WARNING toxic to skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. Avoid skin and eye contact.
Good general ventilation is normally adequate. Keep away from open flames or other sources of ignition.
b. Clean brushes with aliphatic naphtha and dry thoroughly before use.
c. Clean surfaces thoroughly with aliphatic naph-tha for better adhesion before applying a brush or spray-on type lubricant.
d. Use clean lubricants only.
e. Wipe grease fittings, oil holes, etc. with clean, dry cloths before lubricating.
f. Remove dirt or rust from surfaces to be lubricated.
g. If practical, work moving parts to ensure thor-ough lubrication.
h. Force grease into fittings until old grease is forced out unless otherwise noted. Old caked grease has a tendency to attract moisture causing corrosion.
i. Fill oil holes to nearly full. Add oil until level does not drop. Squirt-oil cans are recommended for oil application.
j. Clean excess lubricant from all but the work-ing surfaces.
1-2 Change 29
Isopropyl alcohol is flammable and WARNING toxic. Good general ventilation is nor-mally adequate. Skin and eye protec-tion is required. Avoid all sources of ignition.
CAUTION Do not use MIL-PRF-680 Type II solvent on door seals. Only use aliphatic naph-tha or isopropyl alcohol.
k. Clean rubber door seals with aliphatic naphtha or isopropyl alcohol only. Do not allow solvent to dry on door seals. Wipe seals with a separate, clean cloth before solvent has a chance to dry. Repeat as necessary until door seals are clean. Lubricate natural or neoprene rubber (black color) with molybdenum disulfide only. Silicone rubber door seals do not require lubrication.
l. Use Stewart-Warner Corporation nozzle (part No. 314150) on grease guns when applying lubricant to an NAS516 grease fitting.
m. Use Alemite hydraulic coupler (part No.
6304-B) on grease guns when applying lubricant to grease fittings MS15000 through MS15006.
n. Piano-type hinges are lubricated with solid film lubricant except for aileron, rudder, and elevator trim tabs. On LOX servicing door hinges, use MIL-G-27617 Type I, II, or III grease. If trim tabs are binding, remove, clean, and lubricate hinge pins with Specification VV-L-800 lubri-cating oil. Reinstall hinge pin and wipe off excess oil.
Replace hinge pin if solid film lubricant is worn away.
Install new pin with Specification MIL-C-16173, Grade 4 corrosion preventative compound.
4. Lubricants. See the table of lubricants for a particular application.
5. Lubrication Symbols. See the table of lubrication sym-bols for a particular application.
