Description

Owens Corning FIBERGLAS TM Pipe Insulations are molded of heavy density resin bonded inorganic glass fibers. The one-piece, 36" (914mm) long, hinged sections are opened, placed over the pipe, closed and secured by means specific to the type as described below.

FIBERGLAS TM Pipe Insulation with Evolution TM Paper-Free ASJ is jacketed with durable, paper free all-service vapor retarder jacket.

The SSL Il® double adhesive closure provides positive mechanical and vapor sealing of the longitudinal jacket seam. All Evolution TM Paper-Free ASJ sizes come with the SSL Il ® closure system.

FIBERGLAS SSL Il ® Pipe Insulation is jacketed with a smooth, reinforced, wrinkle resistant all-service vapor retarder jacket (ASJ). This product has the same SSL Il® closure system as EvolutionTM Paper-Free ASJ and is

Product Data Sheet available in the most popular pipe sizes. For the larger ASJ sizes, FIBERGLAS TM Pipe Insulation is furnished with a SSL°1 single adhesive lap seal.

Both systems include pressure sensitive butt strip seals that complete the positive closure system.

FIBERGLAS TM Pipe Insulation is also available without a jacket.

"No Wrap" pipe insulation intended for field installation with jacketing appropriate to the vapor control, damage or corrosion resistance requirements of the application.

Uses

Insulation of hot, cold, concealed and exposed piping operating at temperatures from 0°F (-18°C) to 850°F (454°C) in commercial buildings, industrial facilities and process or power plants.

Product Attributes

EvolutionTM Jacket The jacket is over 3X tougher* than standard ASJ. The paper free all service jacket does not support mold growth** and is designed to have compatble finished job appearance with standard ASJ.

SSL II ® Positive Closure System The double adhesive lap seal and two-part butt strip seal provide effective long tem vapor sealing of the longitudinal and butt joints.

Positive closure is fast, neat and foolproof. There is no need for staples which promotes job site productivity.

Jacket and Lap Shipped Adhered Short pieces of insulation can be cut without jacket loss and the section will not come apart in handling. There are no "dog-ears" in or out of the carton. Dust and moisture cannot reach the lap seal. Butt strips come in sealed bags inside the carton so they can stay clean until the moment of use.

Excellent Thermal Performance FIBERGLAS TM Pipe Insulation's low thermal conductivity contributes to lower operating costs of heating and cooling equipment.

Meets Model Code Fire Ratings The flame spread rating of 25 or less and smoke developed rating of 50 or less usually means that FIBERGLAS TM Pipe Insulation will be granted immediate building code approval.

Application Recommendations

The hinged sections of FIBERGLASTM Pipe Insulation are opened, placed over the pipe, carefully aligned, and sealed or jacketed as required by the form of the insulation and the application.

All jacketed SSL Il® Pipe Insulation is shipped with the jacket and longitudinal lap closed, the two adhesives separated by a release strip. The insulation is opened by pulling the release strip from between the two adhesive strips.

The insulation is placed on the pipe, carefully aligned, and the two adhesives rubbed firmly together to close and seal. The two part butt strip seal completes the positive closure. Application may be at ambient temperatures from 25°F (-4°C) to I10°F (43°C).

Based on puncture resistance, burst strength and tensile strength testing.

" Evolutionim Jacket does not support mold growth when tested in accordance with ASTM CI338.

Facts at a glance

ASJ ASJ+

EarthwoolTM 1000° Pipe Insulation

Description Knauf Insulation Earthwool™ 1000° Pipe Insulation is a molded, heavy-density, one-piece insulation made from inorganic glass fibers bonded with ECOSE® Technology. It is produced in 3' lengths with or without a factory-applied jacket.

ASJ+ is the newest generation all-service jacket composed of aluminum foil, reinforced with a glass scrim bonded to a kraft paper interleaving with an outer film layer leaving no paper exposed.

A matching ASJ+ butt strip is furnished in the carton for each section. The jacket is white, and the longitudinal lap of the jacket has a self-sealing adhesive.

Earthwool Earthwool is the new benchmark that stands apart for its genuine sustainability, unsurpassed perfor-mance and consistently high product quality.

ECOSE Technology ECOSE Technology is a revolutionary binder based on rapidly renewable bio-based materials rather than non-renewable petroleum-based chemicals such as phenol, formaldehyde or acrylics.

ECOSE Technology reduces Knauf Insulation’s binder embodied energy and contains no phenol, formaldehyde, acrylics or artificial colors found in traditional fiber glass insulation.

Application Earthwool 1000° Pipe Insulation is used to insulate iron and copper piping in industrial applications and in commercial and institutional buildings. Earthwool 1000° Pipe Insulation is suitable for hot, cold, concealed and exposed piping systems operating at temperatures from 0°F-1000°F (-18°C to 538°C).

For more information call (800) 825-4434, ext. 8300 or visit us online at www.knaufinsulation.us

• Knauf Insulation recommends, for insulation thicknesses greater than 6” (152 mm) the temperature must be increased from 500°F (260°C) to maximum temperature at a rate not exceeding 100°F (56°C) per hour.

• During initial heat-up to operating temperatures above 350°F (177°C), a slight odor and some smoke may be given off as a portion of the bonding material used in the insulation begins to undergo a controlled decomposition.

• If natural convection is not adequate in confined areas, forced ventilation should be provided in order to protect against any harmful fumes and vapors that might be generated.

• Care must also be taken when using sealants, solvents or flammable adhesive during installation.

• A maximum of 6″ (152 mm) wall thickness is recommended.

Cold Pipe

• Use a continuous vapor retarder on piping operating below ambient temperatures.

• Seal all joints, surfaces, seams and fittings to prevent condensation.

• On below freezing applications, and in high-abuse areas, the ASJ+ jacket shall be protected with a PVC vapor retarding outer jacket. In addition, exposed ends of insulation shall be sealed with vapor barrier mastic installed per the mastic manufacturer’s instructions. Vapor seals at butt joints shall be applied at every fourth pipe section joint and at each fitting to isolate any water incursion.

• On chilled water systems operating in high humidity conditions, it is recommended that the same guidelines be followed as listed above for below freezing applications.

• Exterior hanger supports are recommended.

Outside Application

• Do not expose pipe insulation to weather. It must be covered with appropriate jacketing, mastic or vapor retardant adhesives.

• All exposed surfaces must be protected. Proto® Indoor/Outdoor PVC Jacketing is recommended.

See Knauf Guide Specifications for recommended PVC jacketing application guidelines.

• Apply jacketing, mastics or vapor retardant adhesives per manufacturer’s instructions.

For metallic jackets, factory-applied condensate retarders are recommended.

ASJ+ SSL

• Keep adhesive and contact surfaces free from dirt and water, and seal immediately once adhesive is exposed.

• Apply when ambient and insulation temperatures are between 20°F and 130°F (-6.7°C and 54°C).

• If stored below 20°F or above 130°F, allow insulation cartons to stand within recommended temperature range for 24 hours prior to application.

• Do not store product below -20°F (-29°C) or above 150°F (66°C).

• When using Knauf Insulation’s SSL closure system, make sure the longitudinal and circumferential joints are properly sealed by rubbing the closure firmly with a squeegee.

Use of staples is not recommended.

• When using Earthwool 1000° Pipe Insulation, the surface temperature of the insulation should be between -20°F and 150°F (-29°C and 66°C) during the life of the insulation.

Fittings and Hangers

• Use Proto 25/50 Rated (ASTM E 84) PVC

Fitting Covers, applying PVC fittings per Proto’s Data Sheet.

• Fittings should be insulated to same thickness as the adjoining insulation.

• Apply fittings per manufacturer’s instructions.

• When required by specification, a hard insert of sufficient length should be used to avoid compression of the insulation.

Additional Precautions Fiber glass may cause temporary skin irritation.

Wear long-sleeved, loose-fitting clothing, head covering, gloves and eye protection when handling and applying material. Wash with soap and warm water after handling. Wash work clothes separately and rinse washer. Use a disposable mask/respirator designed for nuisance-type dusts where sensitivity to dust and airborne particles may cause irritation to the nose or throat.

Application Guidelines Storage

• Protect insulation from water damage or other abuse, welding sparks and open flame.

• Cartons are not designed for outside storage.

Preparation

• Apply only on clean, dry surfaces.

• Pipe or vessel should be tested and released before insulation is applied.

General Guidelines

• All sections should be firmly butted.

• Seal circumferential joint with a minimum 3"

(76 mm) wide butt strip.

• Jackets, coating and adhesives should have a comparable F.H.C. rating.

• ASJ+ may be painted. As with traditional ASJ, Knauf Insulation does not encourage the painting of ASJ+ because the application of any paint may change the surface burning characteristics and will void the Knauf Insulation Limited Warranty. Where painting is necessary use common water, oil, or solvent-based paints. All paints should be tested for compatibility and adhesion before use.

• All piping should have continuous insulation.

• Position longitudinal lap downward to avoid dirt and moisture infiltration.

• Do not expose pipe insulation to excessive vibration or physical abuse.

• Faced insulation should not have a facing temperature above 150°F (66°C).

Recommended Thicknesses

(ASHRAE 90.1-1989)

The minimum thicknesses are based on ASHRAE 90.1-1989 standards and do not necessarily represent the Economic Thickness of Insulation or the thickness required for proper condensation control. Rather, they serve as minimum recommendations for commercial applications.

For recommended Economic Thickness, install according to Knauf Insulation or NAIMA 3E programs or as specified.

Fiber Glass and Mold Fiber glass insulation will not sustain mold growth.

However, mold can grow on almost any material

Ceel-Co® 550 PVC Insulated Fitting Covers and Jacketing

Description

Ceel-Co 550 PVC fitting covers are designed to insulate and to provide a protective covering for pipe fittings. The fitting covers are supplied with Hi-Lo® Temp formaldehyde-free fiber glass insulation inserts from the factory. Ceel-Co PVC jacketing provides a protective covering for insulated or bare pipes. Ceel-Co 550 PVC fitting covers and Ceel-Co jacketing are manufactured from high-impact, gloss white, UV-resistant, polyvinyl chloride which provides a simple, quickly installed system.

Available Shapes and Sizes

Fitting Covers. Ceel-Co 550 Series PVC fitting covers are available for the following: 45° and 90° (0.8 and 1.6 rad.) short and long radius elbows, tees and valves, flanges, reducers, end caps, soil pipe hubs, traps and mechanical groove-type fittings.

Jacketing. Ceel-Co PVC jacketing is available in rolls in thicknesses of 10, 15, 20 and 30 mil (0.3, 0.4, 0.5 and 0.8 mm).

Cut & Curled™ Jacketing. Ceel-Co PVC Cut & Curled jacketing is available in thicknesses of 20 or 30 mil (0.5 mm or 0.8 mm) (30 mil [0.8 mm] recommended for outdoor applications). It is available in factory-cut sizes to fit up to 30” (762 mm) O.D. All sections of Ceel-Co PVC Cut & Curled jacketing are 48” (1219 mm) in length and are factory curled to fit snugly.

Uses

Ceel-Co 550 PVC fitting covers and jacketing are ideally suited for indoor or outdoor use on chilled water, hot water, steam and other piping systems in commercial, institutional, and industrial applications. The fitting covers, when combined with Ceel-Co PVC jacketing and Ceel-Co solvent welding adhesive, form a completely sealed system which meets the requirements of the USDA and FDA for applications in food, beverage, and pharmaceutical facilities.

Qualifications for Use

Hot Systems

• PVC covers must be kept below 150°F (66°C) by use of proper insulation thickness.

• PVC covers should be kept away from contact with, or exposure to, sources of direct or radiated heat.

• For fittings where operating temperatures exceed 250°F

(121°C), or where pipe insulation thickness is greater than 11/2" (38 mm), two or more layers of Hi-Lo Temp insulation inserts are required beneath fitting cover.

Cold Systems

• An approved vapor retarder mastic compatible with PVC must be applied between pipe insulation and fitting cover, and on fitting cover throat overlap seam.

• For fittings where operating temperature is below 45°F (7°C) or where the pipe insulation thickness is greater than 11/2" (38 mm), two or more layers of Hi-Lo Temp insulation inserts are required beneath fitting cover.

CI-80 10-03 (Replaces 2-02)

Refrigerant Systems and Cold Systems in Severe Ambient Conditions

• Mitered pipe insulation segments. Fabricated or premolded insulation shapes may be used in lieu of Hi-Lo Temp insulation inserts.

• An intermediate vapor retarder compatible with PVC is required to completely seal the insulation prior to installing the Ceel-Co 550 PVC fitting cover. Care should be taken to ensure that the vapor barrier mastic is applied between the pipe insulation and the fitting cover, and on fitting cover throat overlap seam.

Totally Sealed Systems (USDA Approval)

• System requires that 20 or 30 mil (0.5 mm or 0.8 mm)

Ceel-Co PVC jacketing is applied to pipe insulation in conjunction with Ceel-Co 550 PVC fitting covers.

• All circumferential and longitudinal seams of jackets and fitting covers should be sealed with Ceel-Co solvent welding adhesive. Circumferential seams should be a minimum 1" (25 mm) overlap, and longitudinal seams should be 11/2" to 2" (38 mm to 51 mm) overlap.

• Upon completion, all seams should visually be checked for seal and touched up, if necessary.

• Slip joints are required periodically between fixed supports and on continuous long runs of straight piping. Slip joints are achieved by increasing circumferential overlap to 8 to 10 inches (203 mm to 254 mm) and applying a flexible white caulking in the overlap area to maintain a sealed system.
